Seokwon Jeon Named Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State men's golfer Seokwon Jeon has been named the America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending Sunday, Oct. 13, in an award that is voted on by a state-wide media panel.
The sophomore from Salt Lake City, Utah shot a 3-under par 68 during his final round and won a two-hole playoff to claim medalist honors at the Utah Invitational last week as he finished the tournament with a collegiate-best 7-under 206 (67-71-68). During his first 18 holes, Jeon tied his collegiate low round with a 4-under 67. Overall, Jeon led Utah State to a tie for second in the nine-team field with a 21-over 1,086 (355-359-372).
Jeon, who defeated Boise State's Ty Travis in a two-hole playoff, becomes the second Aggie golfer in as many events to win a tournament as current senior Tanner Higham won the Boise State hosted Dash Thomas Memorial with an 8-under 205 (71-67-67) in the team's last competition on Sept. 24, 2013.
Utah State finished the Utah Invitational tied for second-place out of nine teams with a 21-over 1,086 (355-259-372) as teams were allowed to compete six players and count five scores. Boise State won the tournament title with an 11-over 1,076 (364-356-356) and UTEP tied USU with its 21-over 1,086 as the Miners had team rounds of 352, 367 and 367.
The golf team will be back in action Oct. 27 and 28 as they compete at the Cal State Northridge Invitational in Northridge, Calif.

FOOTBALL - Senior cornerback Nevin Lawson (Lauderhill, Fla.) intercepted a career-high two passes and returned one 65 yards for his first career touchdown in Utah State's 34-23 home loss to Boise State last weekend. Lawson also recorded a career-high five passes defended against the Broncos with his two interceptions and three pass breakups to go along with a career-high tying nine tackles, which included one tackle for loss.
SOCCER - Junior midfielder Kylie Dibb (American Fork, Utah) helped Utah State to a 1-1 Mountain West road record last weekend as it lost at Fresno State, 1-0, in overtime and won at San José State, 2-0. Against the Spartans, Dibb scored the game-winning goal in the 55th minute.
MEN'S TENNIS - Senior Andrew Whiting (Las Vegas, Nev.) won the Black Singles Draw at the Utah Intercollegiate Tournament last weekend featuring players from Utah, BYU and Weber State. Whiting went 3-0 in singles play, winning the championship match against junior teammate Curran Wearmouth in three sets (2-6, 7-5, 7-5) after defeating the No. 2 seed in the bracket, BYU's Jeremy Bourgeois (3-6, 6-4, 6-3).
WOMEN'S TENNIS - Junior McKenzie Davis (Salt Lake City, Utah) teamed with sophomore Aggie Kallie Sperry for a 2-1 doubles record as the duo advanced to the quarterfinals at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Championship held last week in Las Vegas, Nev. Davis also posted a 1-1 singles record during the week.
VOLLEYBALL - Senior outside hitter Tumua Etimani (Richardson, Texas) posted a pair of double-doubles last week in helping Utah State to a 1-1 Mountain West road record with a four-set loss at No. 13 Colorado State and a four-set win at Wyoming. Against the Rams, Etimani recorded 10 kills and 13 digs to go along with two blocks, two assists and one service ace. Against the Cowgirls, she notched her team-leading eighth double-double of the season with a career-high 21 digs to go along with a team-high tying 12 kills. She also tied her career-high with three blocks against UW to go along with one service ace and one assist. For the week, Etimani hit .091 (22-13-99) and averaged 2.75 kills, 4.25 digs, 0.62 blocks, 0.38 assists and 0.25 service aces per set.
