LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Utah State men's tennis dropped it's first Western Athletic Conference contest on Friday night, 7-0, to the No. 54 ranked team in the nation, New Mexico State. USU falls to 0-2 this spring with the loss.
The Aggies challenged NMSU early in doubles action but was unable to hold serve against the high-powered crimson Aggies. Senior Nate Ballam and freshman Curran Wearmouth got down 6-1 in the third slot but battled back in the match and forced the score to, 7-6, before falling, 8-6.
Utah State lead early in each of the singles matches but could not corral the momentum of New Mexico State. Freshman Matt Sweet battled to the brink against Germain Degardin, winning the first set, 6-4, to take the early advantage. Sweet continued to lock horns with Degardin in the second set trading point for point late in the set before fading to Degardin, who took the set from Sweet, 7-5. Sweet could not recover in the third and final set as Degardin took control and won the final set, 6-3. Sweet was the only player for USU who did not get defeated in straight sets on Friday night.
The Aggies will look to quickly recover as it takes on Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Saturday, January 21 in Las Cruces at 11 a.m. (MT). The Aggies will be looking for their first victory of the young season. Fans can follow Utah State athletics, including both USU tennis teams, at http://twitter.com/USUAthletics.
