LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Utah State men's tennis team lost the opening match of the weekend to the Islanders of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday afternoon by a final score of 4-0 in Las Cruces, N.M.
The Islanders' coach decided to end the match after they earned their match-clinching fourth point.
"Guys are still transitioning from indoor tennis to outdoor tennis and today we were a little flat," said USU head coach Clancy Shields. "Corpus Christi is a very good outdoor team, and today they played with a lot of resolve to win. I'm really pleased with the attitude and effort we have been putting forward. We are in the stage of learning how to win, and to win, you have to execute your shots and finish points. Once we get more consistent in these areas, we will compete at a much higher level."
In the doubles round, junior Sean Levesque and freshman Dennis Baumgartner were bested by a score of 6-2 by TAMCC's Pietro Jordao and Javier Pujol. After senior Fredrik Peterson and junior Marcus Fritz lost to Peter Nagy and Guillaume Rauseo 6-3, the teams decided to end the third doubles match, which featured senior Andrew Whiting and junior Matt Sweet, early and advance to singles play.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Matt Westmoreland earned the second point for the team after defeating Levesque 6-0, 6-2. Then, Nagy defeated Baumgartner in the first singles position 6-3, 6-0 to put TAMCC up 3-0. Finally, Pujol defeated Sweet, 6-1, 6-4 to win the dual match.
At the time the match was called, Fritz and freshman Tomas Cosmai were up in their respective singles matches.
The Aggies next take on former Western Athletic Conference foe New Mexico State on Saturday at 11 a.m. (MT).
