AUSTIN, Texas - Utah State men's tennis (4-3, 1-0 MW) lost 6-1 to No. 16 Texas (5-2, 0-0 Big 12) on Friday night in Austin, Texas.

"Overall, I was really proud of the guys' fight today," head coach James Wilson said. "Texas is a strong team and definitely worthy of its ranking. We are close to becoming a very good team, but we need to continue to improve certain aspects. Sunday is another opportunity to get better."

Texas won the doubles point after victories at the No. 1 and No.3 spots. Sophomore Sergiu Bucur and freshman Felipe Acosta lost, 3-6, at the No. 3 spot to junior Colin Markes and sophomore Yuya Ito. At the top spot, senior Jaime Barajas and freshman Jose Carvajal lost, 2-6, to juniors Rodrigo Banzer and Leonardo Telles, the No. 4 ranked doubles team in the nation. Junior Samuel Serrano and freshman Valdemar Holm were up, 5-4, at the No. 2 spot against redshirt junior Adrian Ortiz and sophomore Christian Sigsgaard, ranked No. 59 in the nation, but the match would end unfinished due to the other courts' results.

In singles, Serrano lost, 1-6, 0-6, to Ito at the No. 2 spot. Light rains interrupted the remaining matches as play began in the second sets and the venue was changed to indoors. After more than an hour, play resumed and Acosta never dropped a game in his second set to upset No. 79 senior John Mee at the No. 6 spot, 6-4, 6-0. Carvajal lost at the No. 4 spot, 2-6, 5-7, to Sigsgaard. No. 37 Telles clinched the win for the Longhorns with a 6-1, 7-6 (9-7) win at the No. 4 spot over Bucur.

After being down early in the first set, Barajas fought back to tie it at 5-5, but lost the first set, 5-7, at the No. 1 spot against No. 54 junior Harrison Scott. Barajas extended the match to three sets after a 7-5 victory in the second set, but lost in the third tiebreaker, 1-0 (10-6). Holm won his first set, 6-4, against No. 85 Banzer at the No. 5 spot, but lost the next two, 7-5, 6-3.

Utah State next heads to San Antonio to take on UTSA (2-4, 0-0 Conference USA) on Sunday at 10 a.m. (MT).
