LOGAN, Utah - Utah State's men's tennis team (5-5, 0-0 MW) evened up its record with a pair of wins on Saturday against Weber State and Colorado Mesa. The Aggies defeated Weber State, 4-2, before almost sweeping the Mavericks, 6-1, on a day where every single Aggie saw time on the court.

"The biggest thing is we played 11 of our guys on our team," said head coach Clancy Shields. "We have 11 guys on our roster, and 11 guys played matches today. For us as a team, that's awesome. You won't see that across the country that 11 guys play in one day. That's how deep this team is, and that's how much confidence as a coaching staff we have in our players and the players have in each other. I'm really excited about getting everyone in today."

The Aggies started the day against in-state foe Weber State where the Aggies earned their first win this spring against another school from the Beehive State in a match that featured a lot of back-and-forth play.

"We found a way to win, and momentum is a crazy thing in tennis," Shields said. "I'm really proud of the guys. There was a lot of weird dynamics that were going on in today's match, and I'm just proud of the guys that they played with a lot of integrity and character and they did a great job."

The Aggies started doubles play with a win at the third position by senior Andrew Whiting and junior Sean Levesque over Weber State's Landon Barlow and Caio Poitena, 8-2. Then, the Wildcats evened the score when Oliver Good and Sanjay Goswami defeated freshman Dennis Baumgartner and junior Marcus Fritz, 8-6, at the first position. The duo of junior Matt Sweet and freshman Sebastian Schneider won the doubles point for the Aggies with an 8-5 win over Jakub Gewert and Todd Fought at the second position.

Singles play openened up with the Wilcats tying the score at 1-1 when Fought defeated senior Fredrik Peterson, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 2 spot. Sweet gave the lead back to the Aggies with a come-from-behind victory over Caio Poitena, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, at the No. 4 spot. However, the Wildcats tied the match again when Gewert defeated Baumgartner 6-4, 5-7, 6-1, at the No. 1 spot.

Fritz gave the Aggies the 3-2 lead with his own comeback at the No. 3 spot when he defeated Good, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5. Then, Schneider clinched the 4-2 dual match victory with a straight-sets win against Barlow, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 5 spot. Freshman Tomas Cosmai was leading his match, 2-1, at the No. 6 spot when the coaches called the match over.

After a short break, the Aggies then faced Colorado Mesa. The match started with an Aggie sweep of the doubles point. Sweet and Schneider opened up doubles play with an 8-4 win over Blake Demond and Cody Freischlag at the second postion. Then, Baumgartner and Fritz matched their teammates' score with an 8-4 win over Jordan Lyden and Spencer Weinberg at the first position. Whiting and freshman Dylan Harlow finished the sweep with an 8-6 win at the third position against Andres Garcia-Rojas.

Schneider began singles play by only dropping one game en route to a 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 3 spot against Garcia-Rojas. Levesque followed up with his own straight-sets win against Freischlag, 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 4 spot. Sweet clinched the fourth point for the Aggies with a straight-sets victory over Weinberg, 7-5, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot.

The Aggies continued playing and Baumgartner earned a straight-sets triumph at the No. 1 spot against Lyden, 6-1, 6-3. Then, junior Curran Wearmouth defeated Demond in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 5 spot. Then, in his first action of the spring, senior Matt Thatcher lost a close match to Trevor Brown, 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 6 spot.

The Aggies are back in action on Friday, Feb. 28, when former Western Athletic Conference foe Idaho travels to Logan for a dual match at the Sports Academy and Racquet Club. First serve is set for 11 a.m.
