Feb. 28, 2004
BOZEMAN, Mont. - Richelle Moon and Hannes Schenk swept their weekend singles matches as the Utah State women's and men's tennis teams brought home victories against Gonzaga here Saturday. The USU women improved to 4-4 while the men improved to 6-6. The Gonzaga women fell to 6-3 while the men fell to 4-4.
The Aggie women avenged their loss to Gonzaga earlier this month in Logan by defeating the Bulldogs 4-3. For the second straight match the Aggies were able to pick up the doubles point and the early lead. Lindsey Bennion lost for the first time in seven matches after she pulled a hamstring. Bennion played through the injury but came up just short as she lost the third set 7-5. USU was able to pick up singles victories from Moon, Courtney Anderson and Carolyn Stephens to seal the victory. With the match already decided Lauren Monson played a pro set in number six singles where she lost 8-6. The Aggie women have won three straight after going only 1-4 to start the season.
"I wondered how we would do facing Gonzaga again," said head coach Christian Wright. "But they came out strong and gave a great effort all the way through."
The USU men bounced back from a tough 6-1 loss to Montana State Friday with an impressive 6-1 win over Gonzaga Saturday. The Aggies dropped the doubles point but were able to sweep the singles 6-0. Schenk recorded his third straight victory as he defeated Reid Arthur 6-4, 6-0. Tyler Bastian recorded his first singles victory of the year as he defeated Jesse Goldsmith 6-2, 6-2. The USU men have won five of their last seven matches.
"The men bounced back well," said Wright. "It was tough playing early Saturday after playing late Friday, but they did great."
