TUCSON, Ariz. - Utah State's men's tennis team (6-7, 0-1 MW) could not hold on after winning the doubles point and fell to Fresno State, 4-3, on Friday in what was the Aggies' Mountain West opener.

"This is our fifth 4-3 loss of the season. We are knocking on the door, but can't quite get in," said USU head coach Clancy Shields. "We had some great individual performances from Dennis (Baumgartner), Marcus (Fritz) and Andrew (Whiting), but we are still waiting for that complete team performance. We have another opportunity against a great Saint Mary's team tomorrow."

The dual match opened with Utah State taking the doubles point, as the Aggies' top duo of junior Fritz and freshman Baumgartner defeated Sai Kartik and John Darmstaedter, 8-4, in the first position. Then, Whiting and senior Fredrik Peterson partnered together for an 8-2 victory against Sam MacNeil and Eric Komati at the third position. Junior Matt Sweet and freshman Dennis Baumgartner did not finish their match, as the Aggies had clinched the doubles point before their match ended.

The Bulldogs quickly tied the match back up in singles when Darmstaedter defeated Schneider, 6-0, 6-3, in the No. 5 spot. Then, Fresno State took the lead after Komati defeated Sweet, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 4 spot. Baumgartner tie the score at 2-2 with a straight sets win, 6-3, 6-4, over Kartik at the No. 1 spot.

Fresno's Nikolas Papic topped Peterson, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 3 spot to give FS a 3-2 lead. Fritz tied the match at 3-3 when he beat MacNeil in three sets, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 2 spot. Then, freshman Tomas Cosmai was narrowly edged out in the No. 6 spot by Ethan Lopez, 6-4, 7-5, to give Fresno State the 4-3 win.

Next up for the Aggies is their last match in Tucson this weekend, as they face Saint Mary's tomorrow at 11 a.m. (MT).
