TUCSON, Ariz. - Utah State's men's tennis team (7-7, 0-1 MW) ended its weekend in Tucson on a high note with a 4-2 win over Saint Mary's on Saturday, as the Aggies picked up their first win away from Logan this season.

"This is by far the best we have played this season as a team," said USU head coach Clancy Shields. "We knew how good Saint Mary's was coming in and the level we would have to play at to win. The guys played relentless; they never gave in. It was a gritty performance, just the way I like it."

The Aggies started the dual match by winning the doubles point as junior Marcus Fritz and freshman Dennis Baumgartner partnered up for an 8-4 win over Joakim Norstrom and Wil Martin at the first position. The Gaels evened the doubles score at 1-1 with an 8-5 win by Alex Hunt and Sam Bloore against freshman Sebastian Schneider and junior Matt Sweet at the second position. The Aggies relied on the experience of seniors Andrew Whiting and Fredrik Peterson to close out the doubles point, and they delivered a 8-7 victory over Tuomas Manner and James Markiewicz at the third position.

Utah State took a 1-0 lead into singles play, where Baumgartner earned a win in straight sets over Norstrom, 7-5, 6-3, at the No. 1 spot. However, the Gaels got a point on the board when Manner defeated Fritz, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 2 spot. Schneider regained the two-point lead for the Aggies with a win over Martin, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 5 spot.

Matthias Olsen gave Saint Mary's one more point with a win in three sets over freshman Tomas Cosmia, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2, at the No. 6 spot. Sweet then won a three set thriller at the No. 4 spot over Hunt, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, to give the Aggies the 4-2 win. Peterson's singles match ended unfinished as USU played to clinch.

Utah State is back in action on Saturday, March 22 against Montana in Boise, Idaho. First serve is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. (MT).
