LOGAN, Utah - No. 49 Utah State men's tennis (12-7, 0-0 MW) swept past Idaho (9-6, 4-2 Big Sky) on Sunday afternoon, 7-0, to extend its winning streak to four matches. This was Utah State's final match before jumping into Mountain West play, as San Diego State comes to Logan next weekend.
"It was a good match for us," said USU head coach James Wilson. "I thought everyone really competed hard and came out with purpose from the start. That was my message to the team, to not let their opponents hang around. I felt like everyone did that for the most part, so that was good for us. We're just trying to improve everyday, so this was a good step."
After a 45-minute delay due to damp courts, the teams started the match with doubles. First, senior Jack Swindells and sophomore Jonas Maier nearly shut out Idaho's duo of Mark Kovacs and Carlos Longhi Neto, who were 11-0 as a duo entering the match, 6-1, at the first position. Then, juniors Jaime Barajas and Andrew Nakajima clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win at the second position against Guilherme Scarpelli and Lucas Coutinho.
The teams moved to singles with Utah State holding a 1-0 lead, and Nakajima quickly extended the margin as he blanked Peter Shin at the No. 6 spot, 6-0, 6-0. Then, Maier swept past Scarpelli, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 5 spot, before sophomore Samuel Serrano defeated Estaban Santibanez at the No. 3 spot, 6-3, 6-0, to clinch the match for the Aggies. The teams decided to play out the remaining matches, and freshman Sergiu Bucur topped Coutinho, 6-1, 6-4, at the No 4 spot, and Swindells defeated Neto in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 2 spot. Rounding out the day, Barajas won his eighth match in a row, a career-long streak, when he defeated Kovacs at the No. 1 spot, 6-4, 6-7 (7), 10-6.
The Aggies are back in action on Saturday, March 25, when they host San Diego State in USU's Mountain West opener at 1:30 p.m. The match is scheduled to be played outdoors on USU's campus, however inclement weather will move the match to the Sports Academy & Racquet Club.
