Box Score

BOISE, Idaho - Utah State's men's tennis team (9-9, 0-2 MW) battled the No. 22-ranked Boise State Broncos (19-4, 3-0), but fell short as the Aggies lost by a final score of 6-1 on Saturday in Boise, Idaho. This match against BSU was first-year USU head coach Clancy Shields' first return to his former school, where he was both a student-athlete and a coach.

"Tough loss today. Guys played hard and went toe to toe with a good team," Shields said. "Boise beat us on the big points and ultimately that was the difference. Marcus was the lone survivor today. He is getting better with every match and starting to play up to his potential."

In doubles play, Boise State took the first two matches, and left the third unfinished. Junior Marcus Fritz and freshman Dennis Baumgartner fell to Brendan McClain and Garrett Patton, 8-2, at the first position. Then, junior Matt Sweet and freshman Sebastian Schneider lost a close match, 8-6, at the third position to Andy Bettles and Abe Hewko. The tandem of seniors Fredrik Peterson and Andrew Whiting were tied 6-6 with Toby Mitchell and Nathan Sereke, 6-6, when the match was ended due to BSU claiming the doubles point.

In singles play, Boise State immediately pushed their lead as Mitchell defeated Whiting, 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 6 spot, and McClain defeated Sweet, 6-0, 6-2, at the No. 4 spot. Then, the Broncos clinched the dual match as Baumgartner fell to the No. 86-ranked singles player in the country, Bettles, 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 1 spot.

The two teams continued playing, and Fritz put a point on the board for the Aggies with a straight-sets, 7-6, 6-2, win over Thomas Tenreiro at the No. 2 spot. However, Schneider fell to Brian Foley at the No. 5 spot, 7-5, 6-2, and Peterson lost in a third set tiebreaker to Garrett Patton, 7-5, 6-7, 10-3 at the No. 3 spot to make the final score 6-1 for Boise State.

The Aggies are back in action Sunday as they face Northern Arizona in Boise. First serve is slated for 11 a.m. (MT).
