USU Men's Tennis Comes Up Short To Fresno State In Saturday Night Cap, 4-0
April 10, 2011
MOSCOW, Idaho -- - Utah State men's tennis team was shut out late Saturday night by Western Athletic Conference foe Fresno State, 4-0 in a neutral court match at Moscow, Idaho. USU was looking to gain traction in the WAC standings this weekend but were unable to get anything going as the team went 0-3 this weekend, with all three matches against WAC schools. The Aggies drop to 11-9 overall and are now 2-4 in conference match-ups.
USU put early pressure on FS in doubles action by splitting decisions, as the Bulldogs quickly took a victory in the one spot, 8-2, but the Aggies answered back in the third position as seniors Jakob Asplund and Nikita Ryashchenko took an 8-4 victory to even up the doubles totals. With the win in the third spot, Asplund and Ryashchenko captured their 13th doubles match win of the season.
Senior Alex Thatcher and partner freshman Fredrik Peterson put together strong resistance to Fresno State's Jean-Charles Diame and Francis Alcantara. Thatcher and Peterson pushed the action deep into the final points of the match but came up just short, as FS took the match, 8-6, and in doing so gave FS the opening point.
Fresno State waisted no time in sending a message to the Aggies in the opening singles match, as Rikus de Villiers only yielded a game to sophomore Sven Poslusny, 6-0, 6-1. The Bulldogs stormed through the No. 2 and No. 3 positions of singles action in straight sets and added the two points to Fresno State's cause, 4-0. Due to time constraints and the late hour the match was called after FS scored the fourth point of the match.
USU will look to rebound in hosting a non-conference match against Air Force on Thursday, April 14, at the Logan Sports Academy and Racquet Club, starting at Noon (MT). Admission to all home Aggie tennis matches is free to the public.
