Utah State's Jakob Asplund Wins Two Matches

PROVO, Utah - Utah State men's tennis completed day one at the Utah Fall Classic hosted by Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Freshman Jakob Asplund went 2-0 in singles action and 1-1 in doubles with partner sophomore Oscar Ericsson. Freshman Asplund defeated Matt Cowley, 6-0, 7-6, in the round of 64. Asplund beat out Jake Beherns in the round of 32, 6-1, 6-2. USU seniors Fernando Gallegos and Jonas Tyden each went 1-1 in singles. Gallegos won against Douglas Alves in the round of 64, going 6-2, 6-1, and then fell in the round of 32 to Ivan Kokurin, 6-2, 6-1. Tyden defeated Jordan Barlow in two sets in the round of 64, 6-1, 6-4, and then lost, 6-3, 6-1, to Thomas Shubert in the round of 32. In doubles action Asplund paired up with sophomore Oscar Ericsson to defeat Andrew Holmes and James Wonnacott, 8-1, in the round of 32. The dual lost in the round of 16 to BYU's Daniel Hwang and Evan Urbina, 8-6. Aggie sophomores Matt Searle and Alex Thatcher battled Ryan Garner and Cole Paterson in the round of 32 and fell, 9-8. The Aggies continue action tomorrow in day two at the Utah Fall Classic. Asplund plays in the round of 16 starting at 10:30 a.m. and will face first-seeded James Ludlow. Thatcher battles Tyden in the consolations round of 64. Gallegos and Ericsson will also play in the consolations round of 64 Friday morning. In doubles action Gallegos/Tyden and Thatcher/Searle will continue in the first round of consolation.
