LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Utah State's men's tennis team competed at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Regional Championship in Las Vegas, Nev. on Wednesday where freshman Dennis Baumgartner picked up three wins for the Aggies.
In the singles portion of the tournament, Baumgartner opened his week with a win in the round of 128 over Montana's Mikolaj Caruk (6-2, 4-6, 6-3) before knocking off the eleventh-seeded Alejandro Medinalla (4-6, 7-6, 6-3) out of Utah who beat senior Matt Thatcher in the previous round (6-1, 6-1).
Junior Matt Sweet earned a win in singles over former Western Athletic Conference foe Idaho's Andrew Zedded (6-2, 7-5) before losing in the round of 64 to in-state rival Utah's Ben Tasevac (6-2, 6-1).
Tamas Batyi out of UNLV defeated Curran Wearmouth (6-2, 6-2), while Mountain West Conference rival Air Force's Alex Grubbs defeated freshman Sebastian Schneider (5-7, 7-5, 6-1). Freshman Tomas Cosmai lost to New Mexico State's Marc Westgate (7-6, 6-3), while Boise State's Brendan McClain defeated senior Fredrik Peterson (6-4, 6-0).
A pair of Aggies were defeated by a pair of Idaho Vandals when Odon Bart defeated junior Sean Levesque (6-4, 5-7, 6-2) and Jose Bendeck beat freshman Dylan Harlow (6-0, 6-1). Senior Andrew Whiting lost to Montana State's Harry James (6-4, 6-2).
In doubles, the Aggies picked up a pair of wins when Baumgartner and Schneider defeated Air Force's Dillon Launius and Ali Rizvi (8-4), and Sweet and Whiting defeated Nevada's Billy Bumgardner and Vlad Shchetinin (8-5).
Cosmai and Wearmouth lost to Northern Colorado's Jeff Carlson and Eric Schuermans (8-3) while Nevada's Andrew Poustie and Fernando Sunago defeated Harlow and Thatcher (8-1). New Mexico's Mads Hegelund and Andy Van Der Vyver deafeated Levesque and Peterson (8-3).
The Aggies are back in action Thursday in the next rounds of the ITA Regional Championship, where Baumgartner will square off against Nevada's Ryan Andrada in the singles round of 32. The doubles team of Baumgartner and Schneider will face Northern Colorado's Mitchel Knight and Jake Sheldon. Sweet and Whiting will take on Air Force's Jake McCullers and Grant Taylor.
In the consolation round, Wearmouth will face Northern Colorado's Michael Moya, Thatcher will face Caruk, Schneider will face Rizvi, Cosmai will compete against Weber State's Anthony Trabert, Peterson will square off against Northern Colorado's Jake Sheldon, Levesque will face Launius, Harlow will compete against Idaho State's Cody Miller and Whiting face will face Air Force's Andrew Parks. Sweet has a bye.
In the doubles consolation round, Harlow and Thatcher will square off against Northern Colorado's Ben Gendron and Austin Mayo. Levesque and Peterson will face a mixed team of Boise State's Abe Hewko and Utah's Justin Archer. Cosmai and Wearmouth have a bye.
