Wearmouth Advances On First Day of ITA Men's Tennis Mountain Regional Championships
Oct. 18, 2012 LAS VEGAS - USU’s men’s tennis traveled to Las Vegas this weekend to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Mountain Regional Championships. The tournament is being held at the Darling Tennis Center. The list of competitors include 107 men from all over the Mountain Region. Play began yesterday in singles, doubles, and consolation brackets. Sophomore Curran Wearmouth came out on top taking out Dylan Hansel of Weber State (6-0, 6-2). He was the only Aggie to advance in the main draw. In singles action, sophomore Matt Sweet fell to Nikki Rae of BYU (6-3, 6-4), and junior Andrew Whiting was taken down by Todd Fought of Weber (6-1, 6-4). Junior Fredrik Peterson was defeated by Yannick Blank of New Mexico (6-2, 6-2). Freshman Zeno Kastelic was eliminated by Naveen Manivannan (6-1, 6-0) and junior Brandon Nielsen was taken down by Strahinja Trecakov (5-7, 6-4, 6-3) both of whom were from New Mexico. Sophomore Tanner Dance fell to Anthony Trabert of Weber State (6-0, 6-0), while Matt Thatcher was defeated by Jake Knox of Idaho (6-4, 6-0). In singles consolation, Sweet, Nielsen, and Dance all advanced to the second round on byes. Whiting went head to head with Jordan Loughnan of Northern Colorado battling for three sets before being defeated (7-6, 6-7, 6-4). Peterson fell to Ethan Vaughn of Montana (6-3, 6-4), and Kastelic was eliminated by Phillip Hinojosa of Nevada (6-3, 6-2). Thatcher was taken down by Steven Young of Air Force ( 6-2, 6-4).
Dance and Sweet took down Ali Rizvi of Air force (8-6) as the only Aggie duos to earn a first-round win. Nielsen and Peterson defeated Javier Martin-Morillas and Markus Schleuter of Montana (8-2). In doubles play, Kastelic and Wearmouth were defeated by Victor Ouvrard and Fernando Sunago of Nevada (8-2), and Thatcher and Whiting lost to Preben Bjorne and Alex Clinkenbeard of Denver (8-5). Kastelic and Wearmouth advanced on a bye to the second round of doubles consolation, while Thatcher and Whiting fell to Filip Fichtel and Knox of Idaho (8-0). Play for the Aggies will continue today and throughout the weekend.
