PROVO, Utah - Utah State men's tennis will be competing for consolation championships tomorrow as Day 3 of the ITA Mountain Regional Championships wrapped up on Friday.
Freshman Valdemar Holm posted a pair of victories in the consolation singles bracket, with a 3-6, 6-3, 10-7 win over John Pearce of BYU, followed by a default victory over Nevada's Kostya Nesterenko in the quarterfinals. On the other side of the bracket, senior Andrew Nakajima advanced to the semifinals with a victory over Montana's Alex Canellopoulos, 7-5, 6-3, in the round of 16, followed by a win by default over Montana State's Alexander Flink in the quarterfinals. Holm and Nakajima could make an all-USU final with victories in the semifinals tomorrow morning at 9. Holm is scheduled to face BYU's Matthew Pearce and Nakajima will face Northern Colorado's Kyle Pease.
Freshman Addy Vashistha will also have a chance to advance to a championship, posting back-to-back wins in the consolation B bracket on Friday. Vashistha began the run with a 6-3, 3-6, 10-1 victory over Montana's Yannick Schmidl and then came close to a blanking Southern Utah's Jonathon Morales in the quarterfinals, posting a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Vashistha will face Utah's Egbert Weverink in the consolation B semifinals tomorrow at 10 a.m., with the finals slated for noon.
In other singles action, junior Samuel Serrano lost in the quarterfinals of the main singles draw with a 6-4, 6-4 result against BYU's Sean Hill. Freshman Filipe Acosta was also eliminated from play in the Consolation B singles bracket, losing his first set to Weverink, 6-3, and then retiring in the second set.
"Sammy (Serrano), overall, had a really good tournament," head coach James Wilson said. "Unfortunately, today he didn't play his best tennis, but overall has had a great fall. Addy and V (Valdemar Holm), to be freshman and to be at this point in the tournament is really promising. Also, for Drew (Andrew Nakajima) to be here is a testament to his hard work.
"It is exciting to have this many players on the last day of the tournament, even if it is the consolation," he continued. "It's been a good regional so far and hopefully we can finish strong."
In doubles, Holm and sophomore Sergiu Bucur captured a pair of victories to advance to the semifinals of the consolation doubles bracket, opening the run with an 8-6 win over Nevada's Jonathan Aremon and Augustin Delahodde, followed by an 8-4 win over Idaho State's Francis Filipovich and William Edin. Bucur and Holm will play in the semifinals tomorrow at 2 p.m., with the final scheduled for 4 p.m.
In other doubles action, the duo of seniors Jaime Barajas and Andrew Nakajima lost 8-6 in the round of 16 to Idaho's Mark Kovacs and Carlos Longhi. Acosta and Vashistha encountered a similar fate, losing their match 8-2 to New Mexico's Ricky Hernandez Tong and Dominic West.
