Utah State Men's Tennis Set To Begin Spring Season Saturday at BYU
Jan. 10, 2014
LOGAN, Utah - Utah State's men's tennis team begins its spring season with a trip to Provo, Utah, to face No. 45-ranked BYU Saturday at 12:00 p.m. for the Aggies' first dual match of the year.
"It is great to finally get the season underway," said first-year head coach Clancy Shields. "The waiting and anticipation is over, and I know I can speak for the team when I say that we are all very excited to begin this journey. BYU is a great team; they have been the top team in the mountain region the last four years, and they have earned that title. This first match will be a test to see where we are, and will be a gut check for this team to see if we can stand toe-to-toe with the regional champion."
The Aggies hope to build on the momentum gained during a strong fall season that saw two Aggies win tournament titles. Freshman Sebastian Schneider won the Orange Flight at the Dar Walters Tennis Classic in Boise, Idaho, and posted a 5-2 overall singles record. Senior Andrew Whiting won the White Draw at the Utah Intercollegiate tournament and earned a 6-3 singles record in the fall.
Utah State also saw contributions from seniors Fredrik Peterson and Matt Thatcher, juniors Curran Wearmouth, Sean Levesque and Matt Sweet, and freshmen Dennis Baumgartner, Dylan Harlow and Tomas Cosmai.
The Aggies will then compete in their first home match of the season on Jan. 20, when Idaho State travels to Logan. The match is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Sports Academy & Racquet Club.
