Utah State Men's Tennis Hosts Two Matches This Week At The Sports Academy And Racquet Club

LOGAN, Utah - Utah state men's tennis hosts two home matches after a month of road competition, beginning Wednesday, Feb. 17 against in-state rival Weber State at 12 p.m. and continuing Saturday, Feb. 20 against Mesa State at 10 a.m. Wednesday marks the first home match for the 3-3 Aggies who are 0-1 in Western Athletic Conference competition. All home matches are held at the Logan Sports Academy and Racquet Club and are free and open to the public.
Utah State's most recent competition was a close loss to No. 29 and WAC rival Boise State, 4-3, Saturday, Feb. 6 in Boise, Idaho. The Aggies dropped the doubles point with losses in all three spots. Juniors Jakob Asplund and Bryan Marchant fell in a close set at the number one position to the Broncos' James Meredith and Harry Skinner, 8-6. BSU's Christian Hodel and Jeff Mullen pulled a narrow victory over freshman Sven Poslusny and senior Amit Maharaj, 8-7, at the number two spot.
USU battled back in singles, taking three of the possible six points. At the four spot, junior Alex Thatcher defeated BSU's Freddy Walsh in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6, while at the number five spot Maharaj took the point with a victory over the Broncos' Michael Gilliland, 7-6, 6-1. Junior Nikita Ryashchenko defeated BSU's Nick Gourley, 7-5, 6-3, at the number six position. Asplund, Poslusny and Marchant all fell in their respective spots.
USU continues action in Bozeman, Mont. with two-days of competition against Montana State and Sacramento State Friday and Saturday, Feb. 26-27.
