LOGAN, Utah - Utah State men's tennis athlete Jakob Asplund has been named the American First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending Sunday, Feb. 17, it was announced on Monday. The award is voted on by a state media panel.

Asplund, a freshman from Stockholm, Sweden, went 2-0 at No. 1 singles last week and 1-1 in doubles play with partner Jonas Tyden as Utah State defeated Portland State, 5-2, and lost to Weber State, 5-2. In singles competition, Asplund defeated WSU's Henning Hipp, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, and then beat PSU's Kyle Erickson, 6-2, 6-1. In doubles action, Asplund and Tyden defeated the Vikings' Kyle Erickson and Alex Hart, 8-4.

This is the first USU Athlete of the Week honor for Asplund this season and his career.

The Aggies' next action will be on Saturday, Feb. 23, as they host Nevada at 11 a.m. at the Sports Academy and Racquet Club.

MEN'S BASKETBALL - Senior Jaycee Carroll (Evanston, Wyo.) averaged 28.0 points and 6.0 rebounds in a pair of road losses to Nevada (85-80) and Hawai'i (71-66) last week. Against the Wolf Pack, Carroll scored 29 points to go along with four rebounds and then had 27 points and eight rebounds against the Rainbow Warriors. For the week, Carroll shot 54.3 percent from the field (19-35), 64.3 percent from three-point range (9-14) and 90.0 percent from the free throw line (9-10).

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL - Senior forward Jenny Gross (Caldwell, Idaho) scored in double-figures for the fourth straight game as she recorded 16 points to go along with six rebounds in Utah State's 61-60 win at San Jose State on Thursday. Gross shot 62.5 percent from the field (5-8) and 66.6 percent from the free throw line (6-9) in the game.

GYMNASTICS - Senior Megan Tschida (St. Paul, Minn.) recorded a season-best 9.875 on floor, tying for first as Utah State finished in second-place in a triangular meet with BYU and New Hampshire Friday night as the Aggies scored a 192.425. Her score on the floor is also the highest by a USU gymnast this season in that event and ranks as the fifth-highest in school history.

 

 

SOFTBALL - Freshman shortstop Kelley Kaneshiro (Auburn, Wash.) hit .400 during the weekend in three games at the Campbell Cartier Classic, helping the Aggies to a 2-2 record with a 4-3 win against UC Santa Barbara, a 6-5 win against Indiana, a 9-8 loss to Tulsa, and a 4-0 loss to host San Diego State. Against Tulsa, Kaneshiro went 3-for-3 at the plate, hitting a single, a double and her first career home run as she had three RBI in the game. She also hit a single against Indiana and tallied another RBI. For the weekend, Kaneshiro went 4-for-10 from the plate with a double, a home run and four RBI, and had a slugging percentage of .800.

MEN'S TRACK - Sophomore Steve Strickland (Orem, Utah) improved his WAC leading time in the 3,000 meters by four seconds with an 8:20.21 in placing 33rd at the Washington Husky Classic during the weekend. That time also ranks as the third-best in school history.

WOMEN'S TRACK - Senior Amy Egan (Latrobe, Pa.) set a school record in the 800 meters with a time of 2:08.27, finishing in second-place at the Washington Husky Classic during the weekend. That time is also an NCAA provisional qualifying time and improves her WAC leading time by two seconds. All-American Lavera Morris of Kentucky won the event with a time of 2:06.74.
