Dennis Baumgartner Named Mountain West Men's Tennis Player of the Week
March 5, 2014
LOGAN, Utah - Utah State freshman Dennis Baumgartner (Rheinfelden, Germany) has been named the Mountain West Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 26 - March 4, as selected by the conference office and announced Wednesday.
"I'm really excited for Dennis to be honored as the Mountain West Men's Tennis Player of the Week. For a freshman, playing at the No. 1 position in singles and doubles is already an accomplishment, but to be excelling at that position speaks volumes to his work ethic and commitment to the team," said USU head coach Clancy Shields.
Last week, Baumgartner won both of his matches in helping Utah State to a 4-3 home win against Idaho, the seventh-ranked team in the Mountain Region. Overall, it was USU's first win against the Vandals since 2007. Against Idaho, Baumgartner posted a straight sets win at No. 1 singles (7-6, 6-4) against the No. 12 ranked singles player in the region and teamed with junior Marcus Fritz for an 8-7 win at the first doubles position against the top-ranked doubles team in the Mountain Region.
This is the first time this season and in his career that Baumgartner has earned Mountain West athlete of the week honors.
UNLV's Lucia Batta was named the women's Player of the Week.
The Aggies have a week off before travelling to Tucson, Ariz., to face Arizona, Fresno State and Saint Mary's on March 13, 14 and 15 respectively. The match against Fresno State will be the Aggies' Mountain West opener.
