LOGAN, Utah - Utah State senior Jaime Barajas has been named the America First Credit Union USU Student Athlete of the Week for the period ending Sunday, April 8, it was announced Monday. The award is voted on by a state-wide media panel.

With their sponsorship of the Student-Athlete of the Week, America First Credit Union donates funds directly to support student-athlete scholarships.

Barajas (Woodland Hills, Calif.) won both of his singles matches at the No. 1 spot helping Utah State to a 2-0 Mountain West home record last week with a 4-3 win against Nevada and a 4-2 victory against Fresno State. Against the Wolf Pack, Barajas won in three sets (7-5, 3-6, 7-5). And against the Bulldogs, Barajas won in straight sets (6-4, 7-5).

Utah State wraps up the regular season with a pair of road matches starting at New Mexico (12-8, 2-1 MW) on Friday, April 13, at 5 p.m. (MT), in Albuquerque. The regular season finale will be in Colorado Springs, Colo., where USU takes on Air Force (10-12, 0-4 MW) on Sunday, April 15, at noon. Going into the final weekend of Mountain West play, the Aggies will be looking for their third consecutive regular season league title.

Nominees from other sports for Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week included: 
GOLF – Senior Braxton Miller (Boise, Idaho) finished tied for 24th place at the Seattle University-hosted Redhawk Invitational last week with a 12-over-par 225 (71-80-74). Utah State finished in 11th place in the 17-team field at 58-over 910 (298-316-296). 

GYMNASTICS – Junior Madison Ward (Rexburg, Idaho) was Utah State’s top finisher at the NCAA Regional Championships, held last weekend at Minneapolis, Minn. Ward recorded a career-high-tying 9.925 to tie for fifth on floor, which ranks first all-time in school history at an NCAA Regional Championships meet. She also tied for 21st on vault with a 9.800, which is tied for eighth all-time in school history at a regional meet.

SOFTBALL – Junior first baseman Bailee Trapp (Tremonton, Utah) was Utah State’s top player last week as the Aggies posted an 0-4 record with a 5-4 home loss to BYU, followed by three Mountain West losses at Fresno State (L, 6-1; L, 4-2; L, 15-1 (5)). Against the Cougars, Trapp went 1-for-3 with a solo home run, and added eight putouts and one assist. In the opener against the Bulldogs, she batted 1-for-3 with a double, while adding nine putouts. The following game, she again went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run, tallying six putouts. She was 0-for-2 in the series finale, adding five putouts. On the week, Trapp batted .273 (3-of-11) with two home runs and a double. She scored two runs and had four RBIs, while tallying 28 putouts and one assist.

WOMEN’S TENNIS – Senior Sabrina Demerath (Kenmore, Wash.) was on track to winning her singles match at the No. 3 spot in USU's 4-0 loss to Northern Arizona last week. Demerath won her first set, 6-3, before losing the second in a tiebreaker, 6-7 (5-7). Demerath led 3-2 in her third set before the match was called.

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD – Senior Clay Lambourne (Riverton, Utah) won the 800 meters at the Utah/Weber State Spring Classic last weekend by breaking his own meet record and finishing in 1:48.72. He finished ahead of second place by one-and-a-half seconds.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD – Sophomore Maia Garren (Logan, Utah) won the hammer throw at the Utah/Weber State Spring Classic last weekend with a personal-best throw of 53.70m (176-2). She also placed third in the shot put with a personal-best toss of 15.54m (51-0), which is the fourth-best throw in school history. Garren also placed sixth in the discus with a throw of 42.37m (139-0).
