LOGAN, Utah - Utah State senior Jaime Barajas has been named the America First Credit Union USU Student Athlete of the Week for the period ending Sunday, April 15, it was announced Monday. The award is voted on by a state-wide media panel.

With their sponsorship of the Student-Athlete of the Week, America First Credit Union donates funds directly to support student-athlete scholarships.

Barajas (Woodland Hills, Calif.) won both of his singles matches last week to help Utah State to a 2-0 Mountain West record with road wins at New Mexico (4-1) and at Air Force (4-2) to secure the MW regular season title for the third year in a row. Against the Lobos, Barajas won at the No. 1 spot in straight sets (6-2, 7-6). And against the Falcons, Barajas again posted a straight-set victory at the No. 1 spot (6-1, 6-4).

Utah State next travels to San Diego, Calif., to participate in the Mountain West Championships from April 26 through 28. Match times and opponents will be announced at the conclusion of Mountain West regular season play.

Nominees from other sports for Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week included: 
GOLF – Freshman Colten Cordingley (Rexburg, Idaho) led Utah State last week as he shot a career-low 5-under-par 67 during his final round to finish tied for 20th place with a 54-hole best 1-under 215 (75-73-67) at the Wyoming-hosted Cowboy Classic held in Chandler, Ariz. For Cordingley, his 20th-place finish is his best-ever tournament finish, while his final round 67 is his career low round and the third-lowest round by an Aggie golfer this season. Overall, it was Cordingley’s third round under par this season and his second round in the 60’s. It was also Cordingley’s first-ever top-20 finish and his first-ever under-par finish with his 1-under 215 (75-73-67). Utah State finished the 15-team tournament in 10th place with a 9-over 873 (294-295-284).

SOFTBALL – Senior catcher/third baseman Brina Buttacavoli (Marysville, Calif.) led Utah State to a 1-3 home record last week as the Aggies fell to Idaho State (9-7) and then posted a 1-2 Mountain West record against Colorado State (L, 3-0; W, 7-6; L, 4-6). Against the Bengals, Buttacavoli went 2-for-4 at the plate, including a triple as she scored one run and had one RBI, while adding one putout and one assist at third base. She was 0-of-3 in the series opener against CSU, but had five putouts behind the plate. In the second game of the doubleheader with the Rams, Buttacavoli went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run and had three putouts. In the series finale, Buttacavoli batted 2-of-4 with a double and a home run, adding four putouts and one assist. On the week, Buttacavoli hit .333 (5-of-15) with one double, one triple and two home runs. She scored three runs and tallied five RBIs, while adding 13 putouts and two assists.

WOMEN’S TENNIS – Sophomore Hannah Jones (South Ogden, Utah) posted a 3-1 record last week, including clinching both wins, as Utah State posted a 2-0 Mountain West home record with wins against Air Force (5-2) and New Mexico (4-3). Against the Falcons, Jones clinched the victory with a straight-set win at the No. 5 spot (6-0, 6-2). Against the Lobos, Jones and freshman Sasha Pisareva posted a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles. Jones then clinched USU's first ever win against UNM with a three-set victory at No. 5 singles (6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-1).

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD –
 Junior Sam Nelson (Boise, Idaho) won the pole vault at the Utah State-hosted Mark Faldmo Invitational last weekend with a personal-best height of 5.17m (16-11.50), which ranks sixth all-time among outdoor pole vaulters in USU history.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD – Senior Tylee Newman-Skinner (Monteview, Idaho) won the 800-meter race at the Utah State-hosted Mark Faldmo Invitational last weekend with a personal-best time of 2:12.69. She also placed fourth in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:58.09, in what was her first time running that race.
