April 20, 2012
RENO, Nev. – In its last match of the regular season, the Utah State men’s tennis team fell 5-2 to the University of Nevada, Friday in Reno.
With the loss, the Aggies fall to 5-13 on the season, 0-4 in WAC play. Nevada improves to 9-10 overall and 2-3 in league action with the win.
USU lost the doubles point, getting the team off to a rough start. Junior Sven Poslusny and freshman Marcus Fritz fell to Wessim Derbel and Fernando Sunago, (8-4), at the No. 1 position. Behind them, sophomore Andrew Whiting and junior Lenny Whiting were defeated by Jordan Rozenfeld and Victor Ouvrard, (8-5). Sophomore Brandon Nielsen and senior Nate Ballam were the only Aggie duo to win, taking down Nathan Reix and Moez Echargui in a tie-break set, (8-7 [7-4]).
The Aggies’ two points of the match came from success at the No. 1 and No. 6 singles spots. Poslusny defeated Derbel in three set, (6-2, 0-6, 6-2), while Lenny Whiting beat Reix in two set, (6-3, 6-2). The middle matches, however, were not so successful. Sophomore Fredrik Peterson, back from an illness, was defeated by Ouvrard, (6-1, 7-5), while Ballam was taken down by Echargui, (6-2, 6-0). Freshman Curran Wearmouth fell to Sunago in straight sets, (7-5, 6-2), while Nielsen wrapped things up with a tight loss to Rozenfeld, (6-1, 7-5).
Friday’s action brought the regular season to a close, with just the WAC Tournament ahead. This year’s tournament will be held at New Mexico State in Las Cruces, N.M. The Aggie women will commence action Thursday, April 26 and the men will begin competition Friday, April 27.
