Mountain West Announces Seeds For Men and Women's Tennis Tournaments

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State's men and women's tennis teams learned their seedings and opponents today for their first-ever Mountain West Tournament, as the MW released the tournament schedule. The women earned the No. 10 seed and are set to face seventh-seeded Nevada on Wednesday, April 23 at 3 p.m. (MT) in the first round, while the eighth-seeded men are paired against against No. 25-ranked Boise State, the top seed in the tournament, in a quarterfinal match that is scheduled on Thursday, April 24 at 11 a.m. (MT).
This will be the first matchup this season for the women against Nevada, however the two recently played during the 2011-12 season when both schools were a part of the Western Athletic Conference, with USU claiming a 4-3 win. Junior McKenzie Davis posted a straight-sets win in the match.
Utah State's men's team faced Boise State earlier this season in Boise, Idaho, where the Broncos edged the Aggies, 6-1. Junior Marcus Fritz posted the Aggies' only point with a win at the No. 2 spot over Thomas Tenreiro, 7-6, 6-2. Utah State head coach Clancy Shields is in his first year at USU after coaching and competing for the Broncos.
The tournament is held in Fresno, Calif., at the Sierra Sport & Racquet Club. This is the Aggie men and women's first appearance in the Mountain West Tournament after eight seasons in the WAC.
In other women's first-round action, eighth-seeded UNLV will take on ninth-seeded Air Force in the first match of the day on Wednesday, April 23 at 11 a.m. (MT), while sixth-seeded San José State faces No. 11 Colorado State at 3 p.m. (PT). Top-seeded Fresno State and second-seeded New Mexico earn first-round byes. Third-seeded San Diego State earns a bye into the quarterfinals, while fourth-seeded Boise State and fifth-seeded Wyoming also open play in the quarterfinals on Friday.
On the men's side, there are three other quaterfinal matches on Thursday, April 24. Fourth-seeded Nevada will take on fifth-seed and host Fresno State at 11 a.m. (MT). Third-seeded San Diego State will face sixth-seeded UNLV, at 3 p.m. (MT) while second-seeded New Mexico goes up against seventh-seeded Air Force at 3 p.m. (MT).
