Utah State men's tennis will head to the Cal-hosted regional for its first NCAA Tournament appearance
May 2, 2017

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State's No. 45-ranked men's tennis team (23-8, 6-1 MW) will travel to Berkeley, Calif., to face No. 23 Northwestern (21-10, 7-4 Big 10) on Friday, May 12, in the NCAA Men's Tennis Championship opening round. The winner will face either No. 8 California or Tennessee Tech.

This is Utah State's first appearance as a team in the NCAA Tournament, previously sending five individuals in 1970 for the program's only other NCAA experience.

"It's going to be a great opportunity," said USU head coach James Wilson. "The excitement of it being our first-ever NCAA tournament is an awesome feeling and a sense of accomplishment. The guys realize we have a very good opportunity. It's going to be a tough match against Northwestern. They've been ranked inside the top-20 all year, and they're a very good program. We feel like we're playing our best tennis right now, and we're very confident, so we're going to be up for the challenge."

It won't be the first big stage for USU men's tennis this year. The Aggies advanced to their first-ever ITA National Team Indoors earlier this year, where they faced three top-10 teams: Virginia, USC and Georgia. Northwestern also competed at the event, and Utah State was able to watch some of their matches.

"It's a big advantage for us, as far as being on a big stage at the ITA Indoors," Wilson said. "Our team will not be intimidated. We will be prepared. Getting a chance to see Northwestern play there, I think we know what to expect a little bit. Throughout the course of the season, this team has been in some big matches and big stages. I'm excited for them, and confident they'll be ready to play."

Utah State advanced to the NCAA Tournament after winning the Mountain West regular season and tournament titles. In the tournament, the Aggies defeated Boise State (4-0), San Diego State (4-1) and the defending MW Tournament champions UNLV (4-0). The Aggies have a program-record 23 wins this year, and have won 15 of their last 16 matches.
