LOGAN, Utah – Utah State head men’s tennis coach Clancy Shields has been named the Mountain West Coach of the Year, as announced by the conference offices on Thursday. Shields led the Aggies to their first-ever Mountain West title in any sport, and also guided sophomore Jaime Barajas to Mountain West Player of the Year honors under his tutelage.

In addition to the conference title, the Aggies climbed to No. 56 nationally, the highest ranking in Utah State men’s tennis history and posted victories over six nationally-ranked opponents, including a 4-3 win over BYU, the second consecutive victory over the Cougars in as many years. USU recorded a school-record 21 wins during the year, besting the previous mark of 18 set the previous season.

The pinnacle of Utah State’s success came during the MW regular season, where the Aggies went 6-1 in league play, en route to the regular season title. The run included a perfect 4-0 record at home as part of a 10-1 season when playing in Logan.

In addition to Barajas being named the Mountain West Player of the Year, teammate Jack Swindells also earned all-Mountain West honors with direction from Shields, as the duo posted 24 and 23 victories in singles, respectively. Barajas was a perfect 5-0 in conference matches at No. 1 singles, while Swindells only dropped one match during league play. Barajas and Swindells were two of six players on the team that totaled 20 or more wins during the year.
