May 25, 2017

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State head men’s tennis coach James Wilson has announced the addition of Aditya Vashistha (Bikaner, India) and Felipe Acosta (Chascomus, Argentina) to the team for the 2017-18 season.

“I am really excited about Aditya and Felipe joining our team,” Wilson said. “They are both hard working, good-character guys that will make an immediate impact on our program. Throughout the recruiting process, I’ve gotten to know them, and understood that they both had high aspirations, and will fit well into our team-first mentality. Although they are young, they will bring a high level of enthusiasm and desire to improve, which we will need in order to reach our goals.”

Vashistha has a Universal Tennis Ranking of 13.34 and has been as high as No. 245 in the ITF Junior rankings. Additionally, Vashistha has been ranked as high as No. 5 among U18s in India, advancing to five semi-finals of ITF events and also capturing an ITF doubles title in 2016. In addition to Utah State, Vashistha was also recruited by Texas Tech, New Mexico and Santa Barbara.

“It is a great opportunity for me and my future to be a part of Utah State’s great tennis and academic program,” Vashistha said. “James and (assistant coach) Ben (Mullis) are both very hardworking coaches and the team is persistent and determined, too. I am grateful to be a part of such an amazing institution and strongly believe I will be a great fit for the team. I’m really looking forward and excited to join Utah State in the fall of 2017.”

Acosta has a Universal Tennis Ranking of 13.03 and an ITF Junior ranking of No. 306. Acosta climbed to as high as No. 4 in Argentina with runner-up appearances in tournaments in Venezuela, Chile and the Brazil-Banana Bowl, in addition to a semi-final appearance in the Argentinian National Cup. Acosta was also being recruited by Kentucky, New Mexico and Arizona.

“I chose USU because it gives me the opportunity of studying and being on a competitive tennis team,” Acosta said. “This will help me to pursue my dream of being a professional tennis player. I am looking forward to studying in a nice atmosphere, meeting other cultures and helping the team to be in the highest position in the rankings.”
