June 1, 2017

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State head men’s tennis coach James Wilson has announced the addition of two more signees in Jose Carvajal  (Pereira, Colombia) and Valdemar Holm (Malmo, Sweden) to the team for the 2017-18 season.

Carvajal has a Universal Tennis Ranking of 13.35 and is currently ranked No. 1,290 in the ATP rankings and has been as high as No. 153 in the ITF rankings. Carvajal has been the top-ranked junior player in Colombia in the U12, U14, U16 and U18 ranks, capturing individual titles at the Condor de Plata Cup and the Uruguay Bowl Cup. Carvajal also claimed titles at ITF events, including the Diana Cup (Salvador) and the Mundo Maya Cup, and was a finalist at the Chuquiago Junior Open. In addition to Utah State, Carvajal was recruited by Southern Methodist, Rice, Wake Forest and North Carolina State.

“Jose is a very accomplished player and has had a lot of experience on the junior and professional circuits,” Wilson said. “To be ranked number one in your country is also a very high achievement and is a testament to his hard work. His ambitions are to develop his game, all the while attaining a great education, and we are grateful to have him. Jose will be able to make an immediate impact on our team in both singles and doubles and I look forward to working with him starting in August.”

“I chose Utah State because it felt right to me after meeting the people and seeing the location,” Carvajal said. “Coach Wilson has a great human quality and I liked that the team was united and had great aspirations. I’m looking forward to accepting the challenge to continue my work to help the team improve in the rankings. Go Aggies!”

Holm has a Universal Tennis Ranking of 12.97 and carries a perfect 12-0 record when appearing with Swedish National teams and has captured several individual gold medals in tournaments he has played for his country. Holm has been ranked as high as No. 491 in the ITF and as high as No. 7 in singles in all of Sweden. In addition to Utah State, Holm was recruited by UNC-Charlotte, East Carolina, Denver and Montana.

“Valdemar is going to be a great addition to our squad,” Wilson said. “He has been one of the best players in Sweden and has traveled around Europe playing at a very high level. From the start, I got the impression that Valdemar loved the game, loved the process of working toward his goals, and that is what attracted me most. His game style and attitude will be a great fit, and I am confident that he will be able to improve and succeed here at USU.“

“I chose Utah State because it has a combination of both great education and a strong tennis program,” Holm said. “Also, James is a very talented coach and I look forward to playing under him. The guys just finished a very successful season and with hard work hopefully we can take another step next year.”
