June 6, 2018

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State men’s tennis will head to Texas for the 2019 ITA Kick-Off Weekend Jan. 25-28, drawing the No. 3-seed in the bracket along with Texas, Miami (Fla.) and Washington. The spot marks the fifth consecutive season for the Aggies at the event, with the winner earning a berth to the 2019 ITA Indoor Nationals.

USU will face No. 42 Miami (Fla.) in the first round of the tournament and then will face No. 12 Texas or No. 51 Washington in the second leg of the event. The Aggies finished the 2017-18 season ranked No. 50 in the nation, leading to the third seed in the ITA event.

“This year’s ITA kick-off will be great for our team,” head men’s tennis coach James Wilson said. “Playing against a high quality opponent like Miami will be an excellent opportunity and an early test to see where we are as a team. I know Miami is well coached and has some very talented players. We will need to be ready for a battle.”

Utah State finished the 2017-18 campaign with an overall mark of 19-9, including a perfect 7-0 mark in league play and captured both the Mountain West regular season and tournament titles. The season was punctuated by a second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament, where the Aggies lost 4-1 to No. 8 TCU in Fort Worth, Texas.

Texas finished the year with a 19-7 mark and a 3-2 ledger in the Big 12, but went on to win the Big 12 Tournament and advanced to the round of 16 in the NCAA Championships, falling 4-1 to Mississippi State.

Miami (Fla.) finished the 2017-18 season with an overall mark of 15-13, including a 4-8 mark in the ACC. The Hurricanes received an at-large berth to the NCAAs, but ended their season with a 4-0 defeat to No. 13 Florida in the second round.

Washington finished its 2017-18 season 13-13 overall and 2-6 in the PAC-12. The Huskies’ season ended in the first round of the PAC-12 Tournament after a 4-2 defeat to Stanford.

Utah State’s best showing at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend came during the 2016-17 season, when the Aggies posted a 4-3 win over then-No. 12 TCU in Fort Worth and advanced to the ITA Indoor Nationals. Current Aggies Sergiu Bucur and Samuel Serrano each posted singles wins during the match.
