Utah State Men’s Tennis Recognized with Two Scholar Athlete Awards

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State had two men’s tennis players recognized by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) for their academics as departed players Jack Swindells and Kai Wehnelt were named scholar athletes. The duo represented 3,908 male and female student athletes honored among NCAA Division I, II and III, along with those in the NAIA and JUCO ranks.

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: be a varsity letterwinner, have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and have been enrolled at their present school for at least two  semesters (including freshman through senior year).

Swindells tied for the team lead last year with 26 total victories in singles, playing Nos. 1-4 in the lineup, finishing the campaign with an overall mark of 26-14. He also led the team with 22 victories in doubles, pairing with Jonas Maier to post an overall mark of 22-13, appearing at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. In addition to his success on the court, Swindells was also recognized as academic all-Mountain West and as a Mountain West Scholar-Athlete.

Wehnelt also tied for the team in lead in singles with 26 victories during the year, finishing 26-16 overall, playing at the top two spots in the lineup. Wehnelt also matched the team lead with 22 victories in doubles, pairing with Samuel Serrano, Jaime Barajas and Sergiu Bucur to post records of 20-12, 2-1 and 0-1, respectively and playing in all three positions in the doubles lineup. Wehnelt was also recognized for his academic achievements by the Mountain West, earning academic all-MW honors and Mountain West Scholar-Athlete accolades.
