Aug 14, 2013
LOGAN, Utah - Newly-hired Utah State men's tennis coach Clancy Shields announced Wednesday the addition of three signees for the 2013-14 season.
Sebastian Schneider, Dennis Baumgartner and Tomas Cosmai will join the Aggie climb starting in this fall.
"I'm very excited to announce the signing of these three tremendous individuals. I definitely think we struck gold in our first recruiting class going into the Mountain West Conference," Shields said.
Schneider comes to Logan by way of Stockholm, Sweden. In 2013, he achieved a top 15 ranking in Sweden in singles play, and made the finals of the Swedish nationals in doubles.
"I'm very excited to bring a player of Sebastian's level to Utah State. More importantly, I'm excited to bring an outstanding individual to the Logan community. Sebastian not only brings an extensive tennis background with him, but also the characteristics that we are looking for in developing a winning culture. Sebastian's work ethic and competitive drive will definitely take him to the top of collegiate tennis," Shields said.
Baumgartner is a native of Reinfelden, Germany. He is a three-time district champion in the Oberrhein and Breisgauand district, and holds a top 25 singles ranking in Germany.
"Dennis is going to be a very exciting player for Utah State. He was nicknamed "The Fighter" by his coach in Germany, and I can only wait in anticipation to see his competitive drive as he competes for the Aggies. Every great player has the foundation of having a great attitude and relentless competitive spirit, Dennis has these two qualities without a doubt. I'm thrilled to welcome Dennis to the Aggie Family," Shields added.
Cosmai, a native of Franklin Lakes, N.J., joins Utah State by way of DePaul High School. He was undefeated in high school play in 2009. He was also named Passaic County Player of the Year from 2010-2013. Cosmai, a three-star recruit according to tennisrecruiting.net, was also ranked top 300 nationally in 2013.
"Tomas is the modern day Rocky Balboa. This kid has a never say die attitude, and I know he will give every ounce of his being to take Aggie tennis to the mountain top. I believe Tomas is going to surprise a lot of people around the country and surpass many of his peers for there is a heart of a champion inside of him. Passion has a funny way of trumping logic, Tomas's passion will be very infectious in the Aggie locker room," Shields said.
