Sebastian Schneider Named Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State men's tennis player Sebastian Schneider has been named the America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending Sunday, Oct. 6, in an award that is voted on by a state-wide media panel.
This is the first time in his Aggie career the freshman has received the award.
During the week, Schneider, a Stockholm, Sweden native, won the Orange Flight singles bracket at the Boise State-hosted Dar Walters Tennis Classic in Boise, Idaho. Schneider won his first contest over Montana's Eric Braun (6-4, 7-5) before defeating Portland State's Brent Wheeler (4-6, 6-4, 6-3). In the quarterfinals, Schneider only lost three games as he beat Seattle's Riley Newman (6-3, 6-0). Schneider then squared off agains the bracket's number-one seed, in-state rival Weber State's Caio Poitena, and won a closely contested three-set match (2-6, 7-6, 6-1). Schneider completed his run with a win in straight sets over Montana's Peter Mimnagh-Fleming (7-6 (4-0), 7-5).
Schneider also went 1-1 in doubles with freshman teammate Dennis Baumgartner, finishing the weekend with a 6-1 record.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY - Senior Kyle McKenna (Farmington, Utah) placed 31st out of 397 runners with a time of 24:38 in the College Men's Gold 8K Race at the 40th annual Paul Short Run, hosted by Lehigh University last weekend. McKenna, whose time is the fastest eight-kilometer race in the Mountain West Conference thus far this season, helped Utah State finish ninth overall out of 47 teams.
WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY - Freshman Tori Parkinson (Wellsville, Utah) placed 87th out of a field of 406 runners with a time of 21:41 in the College Women's Gold 6K Race at the 40th annual Paul Short Run, hosted by Lehigh University last weekend helping Utah State place 21st out of 48 teams.
FOOTBALL - Senior linebacker Jake Doughty (Draper, Utah) recorded 14 tackles to go along with a career-high 2.5 tackles for loss in Utah State's 31-14 home loss to BYU last weekend. Doughty also had a quarterback hurry against the Cougars.
SOCCER - Senior forward Jennifer Flynn (Sandy, Utah) scored the game-winning goal in Utah State's 1-0 win against Wyoming last weekend in its only match of the week. The senior led the Aggies with five of USU's 10 shots against UW, three of which were on goal. She also played a season-high 62 minutes, while starting her third match of the season. Flynn's goal in the 52nd minute against the Cowgirls was her third of the season and her second game-winning goal of the year.
VOLLEYBALL - Junior middle blocker Kaitlyn VanHoff (Draper, Utah) posted 10 kills and a team-high four blocks in Utah State's 3-0 loss to New Mexico last week. VanHoff, who hit .269 (10-3-26) against the Lobos, added one dig in the match.
