LOGAN, Utah - Utah State men's tennis player Sebastian Schneider has been named the America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending Sunday, Oct. 6, in an award that is voted on by a state-wide media panel.
This is the first time in his Aggie career the freshman has received the award.
During the week, Schneider, a Stockholm, Sweden native, won the Orange Flight singles bracket at the Boise State-hosted Dar Walters Tennis Classic in Boise, Idaho. Schneider won his first contest over Montana's Eric Braun (6-4, 7-5) before defeating Portland State's Brent Wheeler (4-6, 6-4, 6-3). In the quarterfinals, Schneider only lost three games as he beat Seattle's Riley Newman (6-3, 6-0). Schneider then squared off agains the bracket's number-one seed, in-state rival Weber State's Caio Poitena, and won a closely contested three-set match (2-6, 7-6, 6-1). Schneider completed his run with a win in straight sets over Montana's Peter Mimnagh-Fleming (7-6 (4-0), 7-5).
Schneider also went 1-1 in doubles with freshman teammate Dennis Baumgartner, finishing the weekend with a 6-1 record.
