CEDAR CITY, Utah - Senior guard Jamelah Brown was the lone Utah State player to finish in double-figures scoring 13 points, as USU defeated Southern Utah, 58-34, Wednesday evening in SUU's Centrum Arena.

Utah State improved to 4-8 on the year, while Southern Utah fell to 2-11 overall. The Aggies are now 2-2 all-time versus the Thunderbirds, as USU picked up its second straight win against SUU.

Senior center Jenny Gross and junior guard Ana Pares each added eight points for Utah State, while Gross tallied a game-high seven rebounds. Junior guard Danyelle Snelgro posted five points, four assists and three steals as well.

Erin Heuett had a game-high of six points and pulled down six rebounds for Southern Utah, while Anne Westwood scored five points and grabbed a game-high eight boards.

Utah State scored the first points of the game on a three-pointer by Brown and the Aggies went on an 8-2 run in the opening three minutes of the first half. USU continued to control the half and took its largest lead of 14 points at 25-11 with 4:19 left to play. Southern Utah came within eight at the end of the half as the Aggies took a 27-19 advantage heading into the lockerroom.

In the opening period, Utah State shot 37.9 percent from the field (11-of-29) and 37.5 percent from behind the arc (3-of-8), while Southern Utah made just 26.1 percent of its field goals (6-of-23), including 0-of-3 (.000) from three-point range.

Utah State scored the first six points of the second-half to increase its lead to 15, before Southern Utah scored the next five points to get within 10. USU then went on an 16-5 run over the next eight-plus minutes to push its margin to 21 at 50-29, as the Aggies had nothing less than an 18 point lead from then on.

 

 

Utah State finished the game by shooting 39.0 percent from the field (23-of-59), 43.8 percent from three-point range (7-of-16) and 83.3 percent from the free throw line (5-of-6), while Southern Utah shot just 22.0 percent (11-of-50), including 7.7 percent from behind the three-point arc (1-of-13). USU out-rebounded SUU, 40-38.

The Aggies begin Western Athletic Conference action hosting San Jose State on Saturday, Jan. 5 at 7 p.m. and Hawai'i on Wednesday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m., both games played here in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum (10,270).
