Women's Basketball Falls At UC Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Ali Aird scored a team-high 17 points and Brittany Hagen tallied 11 as Utah State lost 66-56 to UC Riverside in women's basketball action here Thursday night. With the loss, Utah State fell to 4-18 overall and 4-10 in the Big West Conference. UC Riverside improved to 7-15 overall and 6-7 in the league.
Aird continued to shoot well from the field, going 7-of-13 and grabbing nine rebounds. Hagen's 11 came in just 22 minutes off the bench for USU. Terrin Johnston and Brittany Tressler each chipped in nine for the Aggies.
Utah State shot just 23.5 percent in the first half as it went into the lockerroom down 32-19. The Highlanders shot just 34.4 percent from the field in the opening half, but were able to knockdown 3-of-8 from behind the arc to USU's 1-of-6.
Utah State ate into UCR's 13-point halftime lead in the second half, getting as close as four points, 50-46, with 8:39 to play in the game, but a 12-3 Highlander run, sparked by two three pointers by UCR's Casandra Reeves, over the next five minutes helped put the game out of reach for the Aggies.
The Aggies were able to cut the deficit to seven, 63-56, with just over a minute to play, but three missed shots and three UCR free throws secured the win for the Highlanders.
UC Riverside was led by Reeves' 29 points as she went 10-for-22 from the field with five three-point baskets. Crystal Harris, who scored 29 points against the Aggies in Logan earlier this year, tallied 13 points and dished-out five assists. LaKeima Stephens also notched double figures for the Highlanders with 14.
The Highlanders out shot the Aggies in the game, hitting 39 percent of their shots compared to USU's 32.8 percent. USU shot 30.8 percent from beyond the arc and 66.7 percent from the charity stripe.
USU did outrebound UCR 45-38 as Tressler, Aird and Jessica Freeman all grabbed nine rebounds.
USU plays its final road game of the season Saturday at Cal State Fullerton. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. (MST)
