WAILUKU, Hawaii -
Facing its first ranked opponent since the 2014-15 season, Utah State women's basketball closed its weekend of competition at the Maui Classic in a 94-55 loss to No. 19/21 Oregon State Saturday.
Junior guard Rachel Brewster led the Aggies in scoring for the second night in a row, scoring 16 points and earning all-tournament team honors. She was joined in double figures by sophomore guard/forward Hailey Bassett who scored 12 points. Sophomore guard Eliza West was the leading rebounder for USU, snagging a season-high five boards. Oregon State had four players in double figures, led by 20 points from Mikayla Pivec.
With the loss, Utah State falls to 1-6 on the season, while Oregon State improves to 5-2 with the win.
Utah State started strong, as Bassett won the tip and scored from 3-point range on the opening possession. The Aggies held the lead for the first three minutes of the contest, but an 18-2 run by the Beavers quickly put Oregon State ahead. Sophomore guard Olivia West snapped the Aggie skid with a pair of free throws. After not making a field goal in nearly five minutes, Brewster hit a layup for the Aggies as the buzzer went off, drawing the foul and hitting the and-1. At the end of the first quarter, the Beavers held the 25-14 lead.
Oregon State continued its hot shooting through the second quarter, while shutting down the Utah State offense. The Aggies scored just four points in the period, with a field goal from Brewster and a pair of free throws by Olivia West. Redshirt sophomore guard Victoria Price took the last shot of the half, but the Beavers ended the quarter with 12-straight points to take a 49-18 lead into the break.
Utah State started the second half with the ball, with Olivia West scoring on that first possession for the first USU points in nearly seven minutes of play. The teams traded baskets back-and-forth for the first three minutes of the quarter, with three Aggies have the opportunity to score. Oregon State went on a 12-2 run through the middle portion of the third, but USU was able to get back into the scoring in the final three minutes. The Aggies matched their first quarter point total of 14, but the Beavers held the 70-32 lead.
Utah State again had a strong start in the fourth quarter, putting up two quick shots and forcing an Oregon State timeout. The Aggie offense surged in the last period, with Bassett and Brewster combining for the first 11 points. Utah State continued to have its best performance of the game throughout the fourth, finishing with 23 points while shooting 47.4 percent. Freshman guard Emmie Harris scored the final points of the night for the Aggies with a 3-point shot and two free throws. Oregon State made one final push in the final minutes of the game, closing the night and the tournament on an 8-0 run.
