Second-Half Slump Sinks Aggie Women In 61-48 Loss To BYU Saturday
Dec. 19, 2009
LOGAN, Utah - An eight-minute scoring drought and a second-half scoring slump sunk Utah State in a 61-48 loss to Brigham Young on Saturday at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum in a women's basketball match-up.
Saturday was USU's first home loss in four home contests, in falling to 4-5 overall, while BYU won its fourth game in the last five outings to improve to 7-3. The Cougars now lead the all-time series, 27-3. Utah State is now 1-1 vs. instate foes after Saturday's loss to BYU, after beating Utah, 67-58 in the Aggies' season-opener on Nov. 13. USU has three more match-ups with Beehive state foes, all in the next three games, starting on Monday, Dec. 21 at home vs. Weber State, then at Southern Utah on Wednesday, Dec. 23 before hosting Utah Valley on Thursday, Dec. 31.
Junior guard Amber White netted 12 points to lead USU and tie for game-high honors. It was White's third-straight double-digit scoring outing and the seventh time in nine games. White was the lone Aggie in double-figures, as the next leading scorers were senior guard Tahara Williams and junior guard Alice Coddington with seven points each.
BYU's Mindy Nielson and Coriann Wood matched White with 12 points each, while Kristen Riley added 11 points and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds, as the Cougars had a 42-30 rebounding advantage.
USU was led by senior center Lydia Whitehead's game-high 10 rebounds, her third double-figure rebounding outing this season.
The Aggies pulled away from a 13-all tie with a 7-0 spurt, getting a three-point play from White in the middle of it and capped by a jumper from junior guard LaCale Pringle-Buchanan for a 20-13 USU lead with 9:08 on the first half clock. After BYU pulled within 22-21 with 6:32 to go on a three-pointer from Jazmine Foremen, USU opened up a 31-24 lead at the 3:37 mark on a layup from redshirt-freshman center Banna Diop.
That would be USU's final points for a while as BYU cut the gap to 31-30 at the half, and opened the second half with a bucket by Riley for the Cougars first lead of the night, a lead they never relinquished, opening up a 38-31 lead, capping the 14-0 run.
Utah State broke the drought with a free throw by Coddington at the 15:30 mark to pull within 38-32. After six more BYU points, junior forward Stacey Howard made a layup with 12:36 on the clock, ending USU's field goal drought at nearly 11 minutes and pulling the Aggies to 44-34.
That would be the closest USU would get as BYU led by as much as 17 at 58-41 with 3:50 to play. The Cougars out-scored the Aggies, 31-17.
After hitting 13-of-25 (52.0 percent) from the field in the first half, Utah State shot a paltry 4-of-21 (19.0 percent) in the second stanza, finishing the night at 17-of-46 (37.0 percent). The Aggies were also 1-of-9 (11.1 percent) from three-point range as well as 59.1 percent (13-of-22) at the free throw stripe.
BYU shot 40.4 percent (23-of-57) from the floor, hitting 5-of-18 (27.8 percent) behind the arc, a different story than last time the Cougars and Aggies met, when BYU went 0-of-26 from three-point range before hitting a trey with 1.7 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime, with BYU going on to win, 61-60, in double OT.
Utah State committed 19 turnovers, while BYU had 18 miscues, but the Cougars capitalized on them better with a 27-10 points off turnovers advantage, including 19-4 in the second half off of 11 second-half Aggie turnovers.
USU faces Weber State on Monday, Dec. 21 at 2 p.m. in the first of three games in the Spectrum, followed by the USU men hosting the Basketball Travelers Invitational sponsored by Gossner Foods, with Cal State Fullerton taking on the Weber State men at 5:30, followed by the Aggie men vs. Morehead State at 8 p.m.
