LOGAN, Utah - A 10-0 Wyoming first-half run, 11 three-pointers by the Cowgirls and 24 points by Hillary Carlson was too much for Utah State to overcome, as the Aggies lost to the Cowgirls, 80-50, Thursday afternoon in women's basketball action at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
USU evens its record at 6-6, while Wyoming improves to 9-3, winning its third in a row and fifth in the last six games. The Cowgirls now lead the all-time series, 14-4, winning the last seven meetings. Thursday wrapped up the Aggies' season-long four-game homestand, going 2-2.
Utah State was led by senior guard Alice Coddington's season-high 14 points while junior forward Ashlee Brown added 12 points, hitting all six of her free throws, to go with a team-leading eight rebounds. Sophomore guard Jenna Johnson snared a career-high six rebounds, surpassing her previous career-best of four boards with five in the first half alone.
Carlson's 24 points was one of three Cowgirls in double-digits, as Aubrey Vandiver and Chaundra Sewell each registered double-doubles, as Vandiver tallied 18 points and 12 rebounds while Sewell logged 12 points to go with 10 rebounds. Jade Kennedy nearly had a triple-double with nine points, eight rebounds and a game-high eight assists, as Wyoming distributed 28 helpers.
USU shot 29.9 percent (20-of-67) from the field, hitting just 3-of-16 (18.8 percent) from three-point range, as well as 7-of-9 (77.8 percent) at the free throw line, marking the first time this season that USU was limited to single-digit free throw attempts.
Wyoming netted 48.5 percent (32-of-66) of its field goals, shooting a better percentage behind the arc at 52.4 percent (11-of-21) along with 5-of-6 (83.3 percent) at the charity stripe.
Wyoming had a 47-35 rebounding edge, as USU tied a season-high with 17 offensive boards. The Cowgirls had a 17-6 bench scoring advantage, marking the first time this season that the Aggies' bench has been held to single-digit scoring.
Utah State opened a 12-6 lead, on a pair of Coddington three-pointers followed by a layup from sophomore forward Banna Diop at the 15:25 mark. Johnson later hit a jumper with 13:44 to go for a 14-11 USU lead. That would be the Aggies' last field goal for the next six minutes, as the Cowgirls went on a 10-0 run to open a 21-14 advantage before Diop ended the drought with a jumper at the 7:42 mark. Wyoming stretched its lead to 30-18, making it a 24-6 run since USU led, 12-6, as Carlson hit back-to-back buckets, the last with 5:16 to go. The UW lead grew to 40-24 at the half.
The Aggie deficit reached 20 for the first time as Sewell hit a jumper at 15:53 for a 49-28 Cowgirl advantage. With the clock reading exactly 10:00, Vandiver hit a free throw to push UW's lead to 30 at 58-28. USU cut the gap to 58-37 as Brown netted a layup, but the Aggies couldn't get any closer, and the Cowgirls stretched their advantage to 32 points on two different occasions.
Utah State's 50 points scored was a season-low and the fewest since a 57-47 loss to Boise State on March 3 of last season.
After the holiday break, USU wraps up non-conference action by hitting the road to open the new year by taking on in-state foe Utah on New Year's Day, Saturday, Jan. 1 in a 3 p.m. match-up at Utah's Huntsman Center at Salt Lake City.
The Aggies return home on Thursday, Jan. 6 to tip-off Western Athletic Conference action by hosting Boise State, and then facing Fresno State at home on Saturday, Jan. 8, both in 7 p.m. contests.
