LOGAN, Utah - - Utah State women's basketball player Elise Nelson was named America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Jan. 5.
Nelson (Springfield, Ore.) scored in double-figures in back-to-back games in leading Utah State to a 2-0 Mountain West record last week in their first-ever MW games with an 88-78 home win against Air Force and a 78-65 road victory at San José State. Against the Falcons, Nelson scored a season-high 11 points going 4-of-6 from the field and 3-for-5 from the free throw line to go along with seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. On the road against the Spartans, she tied her season high with 11 points, going 5-of-8 from the field and 1-for-2 at the free throw line. She also had seven rebounds, seven assists and five steals against SJSU.
For the week, Nelson averaged 11.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 4.0 steals per game, while shooting 64.3 percent from the field (9-of-14), including 57.1 percent from the charity stripe (4-of-7).
Nelson has played very well of late scoring in double figures in four of the last six games. She is first in the Mountain West in steals with 3.2 steals per game. She is also third in the league in assists, averaging 4.9 apg and first in assist-turnover ratio (3.2).
Utah State is back in action, hosting Mountain West foe Nevada on Saturday, Jan. 11at 7 p.m. in its only game this week. USU is currently 8-5 overall and 2-0 in league play. This is the third-straight season that the Aggies have begun league play 2-0 after starting the last two seasons in the Western Athletic Conference with 2-0 records.

MEN'S BASKETBALL - Senior guard TeNale Roland (Louisville, Ky.) helped Utah State to a 1-1 Mountain West record last week with a 73-72 loss at Air Force and an 86-67 home win against San Jose State. Against the Falcons, Roland scored six points to go along with three assists. Against the Spartans, he scored a career-high 20 points to go along with three rebounds, three assists and one steal in just 24 minutes. In the SJSU game, Roland scored all 20 of his points in the second-half as he had career-highs in three-pointers made (5) and field goals made (7). For the week, Roland averaged 13.0 points, 3.0 assists, 2.0 rebounds and 0.5 steals and shot 69.2 percent from the field (9-13), 70.0 percent from three-point range (7-10) and 50.0 percent at the free throw line (1-2).
