Women's Basketball's Christensen Named America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State women's basketball senior guard Devyn Christensen was named America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending March 17. The senior has been honored four times this season and five times during her career after earning the award once during the 2010-11 season. The USU women's basketball team has been recognized seven times this season with Christensen being honor twice, Jennifer Schlott twice and Jenna Johnson once. Christensen (Caldwell, Idaho) was named to the WAC's all-tournament team as she led Utah State to the semifinals of the conference tournament with a win against Denver (78-65) and a loss to eventual tournament champion Idaho (84-82). Against the Pioneers, she scored 16 points to go along with one rebound and one steal. Against the Vandals, she scored a career-high 37 points, which are the second-most in a single-game in school history, as she was 14-of-24 (.583) from the field and 9-of-16 (.563) from three-point range. For the tournament, Christensen averaged 26.5 points, 1.5 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 0.5 steals per game, while shooting and 51.3 percent from the field (20-39) and 50.0 percent from three-point range (13-26). Utah State's all-time leading scorer helped the Aggies average 80.0 points per game and shoot 48.7 percent from the field. The Aggies now await the announcements of the NCAA and Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) brackets on Monday, March 17 to determine their postseason fate. OTHER UTAH STATE NOMINEES MEN'S BASKETBALL - Junior center Jarred Shaw (Dallas, Texas) scored a team-high 20 points and a game-high nine rebounds in fifth-seeded Utah State's 83-78 loss to fourth-seeded UT Arlington in the quarterfinals of the WAC Tournament last week. Shaw was 8-of-13 (.615) from the field and 4-of-5 (.800) from the free throw line against the Mavericks as he recorded his 13th-straight double-figure scoring game and the 26th of the year. GYMNASTICS - Sophomore Sarah Landes (Edmond, Okla.) finished second in the all-around as Utah State lost to No. 23 Boise State, 195.300-194.125, in its home finale last weekend. Landes, who had a season-high score of 39.225 in the all-around, also matched her career-highs on both vault (9.875) and floor (9.875) to tie for second on vault and place fourth on floor. Landes also tied for fifth on bars (9.800) and finished sixth on the balance beam (9.675). SOFTBALL - Senior infielder Christine Thomsen (Fresno, Calif.) helped Utah State to a 5-2 record last week as it swept a doubleheader at Weber State (2-1, 11-3) at then posted a 3-2 record at the Boise State hosted SpringHill Suites Invitational as it defeated Boise State (5-3 (8)), Idaho State (3-2) and Portland State (6-5 (8)), before dropping the final two games of the tournament to Portland State (7-0) and Idaho State (9-0 (5)). Thomsen's best game of the week was in USU's come-from-behind 6-5 win against Portland State as she went 2-for-5 at the plate with a double and two runs batted in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Aggies trailed by five runs heading into the seventh.
