LOGAN, Utah - With the release of the complete conference schedule from the Mountain West, Utah State women’s basketball has announced the league portion of its schedule for the 2017-18 season.
The schedule format for the 11-member lineup includes eight home-and-home series and two one-time games. Each institution will play nine home contests and make nine road trips during the conference portion of the season. This is the fifth year that the Mountain West has utilized the 18-game format since expanding to its current membership in 2013-14. Competition is set to begin on Thursday, Dec. 28 and will conclude on Friday, March 2.
“I’m looking forward to the 2017-18 edition of Aggie basketball on the women’s side,” head women’s basketball coach Jerry Finkbeiner said. “Without really evaluating the home and aways and where they fit, we do know that this team will be competitive. We expect to improve our conference win total for the fourth consecutive year.
“We have some teeth in our program now and have the ability to beat the top teams,” he continued. “We are in the process of getting to where we want to be to win a Mountain West championship. It is always exciting, even in June, with the Mountain West slate unfolding.”
The Aggies will open the conference season on the road, playing at San José State on Thursday, Dec. 28. The team will then return to the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum, hosting San Diego State on Saturday, Dec. 30. Utah State will then travel to Fresno State on Wednesday, Jan. 3, before returning home to face UNLV on Saturday, Jan. 6. The following week will also be a split for the Aggies as USU will travel to Colorado State on Wednesday, Jan. 10, and then welcome Nevada to the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum on Saturday, Jan. 13.
Utah State remains at home on Wednesday, Jan. 17, hosting Boise State before traveling to Wyoming on Saturday, Jan. 20. USU will close out the month of January with a road game at Air Force on Wednesday, Jan. 24, a home contest against Fresno state on Saturday, Jan. 27 and another road game at New Mexico on Wednesday, Jan. 31.
Utah State will then have its first bye of the conference season before hosting Wyoming on Wednesday, Feb. 7. The month of February continues with a road game at Boise State on Saturday, Feb. 10, followed by a home contest against New Mexico on Valentine’s Day, Wednesday, Feb. 14. The Aggies then play at Nevada on Saturday, Feb. 17 before their second bye of the season.
Action from the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum will continue on Saturday, Feb. 24, when USU hosts Air Force. The Aggies then play their home finale, hosting San José State for Senior Night on Tuesday, Feb. 27. USU will close the year on the road at UNLV on Friday, March 2.
League play will determine the seeding for the 2018 Mountain West Women’s Basketball Championship, held March 5-7 and 9 at the Thomas & Mack Center on the campus of UNLV.
Utah State will return 10 players from the 2016-17 roster, a team that finished the year with a 17-15 overall record, going 9-9 in Mountain West action. The Aggies will also welcome three new players to the squad, replacing five others lost to graduation or transfer.
