Women's Basketball Adds Junior College Player
Aug. 21, 2003
LOGAN, Utah - Utah State head women's basketball coach Raegan Pebley announced today the addition of Ali Aird to the Aggies basketball program. The 6-3 post player completed her freshman season at Salt Lake Community College during the 2002-03 season and will have three years of eligibility at USU.
"Ali is the post player we have been looking for," Pebley said. "She is very mobile and strong and likes to be on the low block. Her presence on our team is going to benefit everyone she plays with."
Aird, a native of Bountiful, Utah, averaged 9.9 points and 5.7 rebounds per game as a freshman at SLCC, leading her team to a 24-8 record. She also led them to the championship game of the Scenic West Athletic Conference Tournament where she averaged 16 points and 4 rebounds during the tournament.
With her strong play as a freshman Aird was also recruited heavily by BYU, Utah and San Diego State, but says she chose Utah State because she believes Pebley is putting together a team that can make it to the NCAA Tournament while she's attending Utah State.
"I'm excited to play for Utah State because of the excitement surrounding the return of women's basketball," said Aird. "The coaches and players are great and that was just a bonus."
The Aggies return to the court for the first time in 16 years as they play Southern Utah in their home opener on Nov. 21.
