Aggie Gymnastics Bucked By Broncos In Friday's Season-Opener, 192.625-187.925

BOISE, Idaho - Utah State opened the 2008 gymnastics season with a 192.625 - 187.925 loss to Boise State in a Western Athletic Conference dual Friday night at BSU's Taco Bell Arena.

It was USU's first loss to BSU in its last five meetings after the Aggies swept all four match-ups with the Broncos last year.

USU sophomore Heather Heinrich took all-around honors, posting a 36.875 while junior teammate Nicki Felley was second with a 36.775. Heinrich and Felley were the only two all-arounders in the meet.

Freshman Nicole Simoneau made a successful Aggie debut by winning the uneven parallel bars event with a 9.800, while fellow freshman Chelsea Marquardt also had a positive opening was third on beam with a 9.550 and tied for third on vault with a 9.700.

The Aggies opened on bars, with Marquardt leading off in her Aggie debut, setting the tone for USU with a 9.500, after senior Megan Tschida followed with a 9.500, the Aggies' next three competitors struggled just a bit until Simoneau wrapped up the rotation with her winning 9.800. USU finished with a 46.950 on bars, moving to vault.

Boise State logged a 48.050 on vault, to take a slim lead after one event.

On the vault, Marquardt posted USU's highest score with a 9.700 while fellow freshman Jasmine Minion logged a 9.675. The Aggies tallied a team score of 47.950 in the rotation while the Broncos scored a 48.625 on bars to push their lead to 96.675-94.900 after two events.

USU opened the second half of the meet on floor exercise, where Tschida had a solid performance, scoring a 9.725 the only Aggie score higher than a 9.400 as USU posted a 46.625 as a team while BSU scored a 47.250 to take a 143.925-141.525 lead heading into the final rotation.

 

 

On beam, Marquardt posted a team-best 9.550, while Minion tallied a 9.450 but USU scored just a 46.400 to finish with a 187.925. Boise State had solid floor routines logging a 48.700 to end with a 192.625.

USU returns to Logan for its home-opener on Jan. 18 against Sacramento State, followed by its second meet in as many weeks against Boise State in the Spectrum on Jan. 22.

All USU home meets begin at 6:30 p.m.
