Aggie Gymnastics Thunderstruck By Thunderbirds, 196.000-192.250
Feb. 4, 2008 CEDAR CITY, Utah - Utah State gymnastics was dealt a 196.000 to 192.250 loss by Southern Utah, in a Western Athletic Conference dual Monday at SUU's Centrum. With the loss, the 46th-ranked Aggies now have both a 1-4 overall and WAC ledger while the No. 17 Thunderbirds improve to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in WAC action. Junior Nicki Felley was USU's top finisher in the all-around with a 38.400 while junior Heather Heinrich was fifth with a 38.375. Freshman Jasmine Minion was the Aggies' only solo event winner with a 9.850 on vault, while fellow freshman Nicole Simoneau was part of a five-way tie for first on bars, tying with four SUU gymnasts with 9.850's. The Aggies opened on bars, where Felley posted a 9.825 for not only a personal season-high but tied a USU season-high, which only lasted one gymnast, as Simoneau followed with her 9.850, the sixth-highest mark in school history but just out of USU's top 25 individual list. Simoneau has now taken top honors on bars in four of the Aggies' five meets. Simoneau was part of a five-way tie for first while Felley was sixth as USU ended its first event with a 47.950. Meanwhile, SUU was on vault for the first rotation, where they posted a 48.700, led by Elise Wheeler's 9.80. After one rotation, the Thunderbirds led the Aggies by 1.75. The teams switched apparatuses, with Utah State moving to vault, where Minion won the event with a 9.850, not just a personal-best but the second-highest score this season for USU. Felley and Heinrich tied for second with 9.825's each, both season bests. Southern Utah had four gymnasts post 9.850's, leading the Thunderbirds to a 49.025 on the event and giving them a 97.725-96.600 lead after two rotations. On floor, Minion logged a 9.775, good for sixth-place, while freshman Lyndsie Boone tallied a season-high 9.725 tying for seventh.
Utah State posted a 48.275 while Southern Utah tallied a 49.275. Moving to beam for the fourth rotation, Boone again logged a season-high with a 9.675, tying for fifth with senior teammate 9.675. Patterson was officially competing in a meet for the first time this season. Utah State posted a 47.375 but SUU had logged a 49.00 and the Thunderbirds won the meet with a total of 196.000 while the Aggies totaled 192.250. Utah State wraps up its three-meet road swing with a quad meet with Oklahoma and Air Force, hosted by Denver, on Saturday, Feb. 9. The Aggies return to the friendly confines of the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum on Friday, Feb. 15, taking on in-state foe BYU along with New Hampshire in a triangular.
