USU Gymnastics Finishes Second In Friday Triangular With BYU And New Hampshire

LOGAN, Utah - In its first home action in three weeks and hosting its first triangular meet in two years, Utah State gymnastics placed second in a tri-meet with BYU and New Hampshire Friday night at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. USU ended with 192.425 points, behind BYU's 193.725 points and ahead of UNH's 190.900. With the result, the Aggies now have a 3-7 ledger, while the Cougars improve to 3-5 and the Wildcats are now 7-4. Friday was USU's first home meet since Jan. 22 and was the Aggies' first triangular meet hosted since Feb. 10, 2006 when Washington and Texas Woman's joined Utah State. Freshman Nicole Simoneau, a native of Manchester, New Hampshire, shared top honors on bars after posting a 9.800, tying with BYU's Kylee Draper-Marvin. Senior Megan Tschida logged a season-best 9.875 on floor, tying for first with BYU's Alethea Boon. Tschida's 9.875 is the fifth-highest score overall on floor in school history, but just out of USU's top individual list. The senior holds the No. 2 spot with her career-best 9.950 on March 1, 2005 of her freshman season, as well as the 19th-spot with a 9.900 on Feb. 23 of last year. Junior Nicki Felley also tallied a season-high on floor with a 9.825, tying for fourth with freshman teammate Jasmine Boone. Simoneau joined in the season-high party with a 9.750 on beam, to tie for second, while sophomore Heather Heinrich tied a season-best with a 9.725 on bars, placing in a tie for fourth. Felley and BYU's Boon were the only two all-arounders, with Felley taking top honors with a 38.400 while Boon had a 38.075. USU opened on vault, with Minion posting a team-high 9.775, part of a three-way tie for second, in helping the Aggies to a 48.350 in the event. For its second rotation, Utah State moved to bars, where Simoneau won at least a share of the event title for the fourth time this season with her sixth score of 9.800 or higher in seven meets. After missing the previous four meets with a knee injury, freshman Chelsea Marquardt returned to the Aggies' line-up on bars, logging a 9.425 to place 12th. USU ended with a meet-high 48.000 on the apparatus and led after two rotations, 96.350-95.900-95.625. In their third rotation, the Aggies were on beam where Simoneau's season-high score helped USU to a 47.225, relinquishing the lead to BYU, 144.975-143.575, entering the final event. After Felley and Minion posted 9.825's each in the fourth and fifth positions, respectively, Tschida closed out the event and the meet with her 9.875, closing the final gap. For their next meet, Utah State will head to Salt Lake City for a Beehive State triangular with #2 Utah and #15 Southern Utah on Friday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. at Utah's Huntsman Center. The Aggies return home to host Denver on Friday, Feb. 29. It is Flip & Stick For The Cure Night to benefit Breast Cancer Awareness. Fans are encouraged to wear pink.
