LOGAN, Utah - With five individual season-high scores and two career-bests, Utah State gymnastics notched a 195.100 to top the Sacramento State Hornets in dual-meet action Friday night.
Utah State notched a 48.850 on vault, 48.850 on bars, 48.750 on beam and a 48.650 on floor, contributing to the 195.100 total. Sacramento State finished with a 49.025 on vault, 48.050 on bars, 48.075 on beam and 48.500 on floor for a total of 193.650.
"It was nice to see them make sure they all hit all four events. When we had a mistake, we didn't fall apart. That was huge, and I'm really proud of them for that," said USU head coach Nadalie Walsh. "We weren't perfect tonight. We're striving for that excellence, but this was a really good step forward."
Junior Sarah Landes was the only Aggie to participate in the all-around, finishing first with a season-best 39.250. Sacramento State also had just one all-around competitor in Jesse Williams who took second with her score of 38.425.
"It's awesome to be able to trust Sarah because she trusts herself," Walsh said. "She thrives on the energy of the crowd and the people. That has been making her a great competitor."
Utah State gymnasts had a three-way tie for first place on bars with senior Paige Jones, freshman Charly Belliston and Landes each scoring a 9.825. Landes also had two other top-three finishes on the night, taking third on beam with a 9.800 and second on floor with a 9.825. Sophomore Stefanie Daley had a season-best 9.825 on beam to finish second. Freshman Bailey McIntire claimed the floor title for the second week in a row, matching her career-best 9.900.
The Aggies started the night on vault, led off by sophomore Jillian Chappel and her 9.700. McIntire notched a 9.775, while freshman Katie Brown scored a 9.625. Landes hit a 9.800 to give her a strong start to her all-around performance, followed by Jones who notched a 9.775. Sophomore Miranda Kerr finished off the rotation with a 9.800.
USU jumped out ahead early with a vault score of 48.850, while Sacramento State opened with a 48.050 on bars.
Switching apparatuses, Utah State went to bars. Junior Kaitlyn Betts notched a 9.600, while McIntire hit a 9.775. Landes, Jones and Belliston followed with their first-place performances, a career-best for Belliston. At the halfway mark on the night, USU maintained its lead. Landes landed a 9.800, while junior Susie Miller stuck a career-best 9.775. After a tough couple of weeks, sophomore Stefanie Daley notched a season-high 9.825.
With one rotation to go, Utah State extended its lead to nearly a full point. USU notched a 48.750 on beam for a total of 146.450, while Sacramento State had a floor score of 48.500 for a total of 145.575.
The Aggies moved to floor for the final event, highlighted by McIntire's 9.900, her second in as many weeks. Miller notched a 9.750 to tied her season-high while Landes followed with her second-place 9.825.
The Aggies continue their month-long homestand next week as they host former Western Athletic Conference rival San José State. The meet on Friday, March 7 will be the team Alumni Night, welcoming back former USU gymnasts. Action from the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum will get underway at 7 p.m.
