LOGAN, Utah - An all-around win and several career and season-highs weren't quite enough for Utah State gymnastics to pull ahead in a dual-meet in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum Monday night. The Aggies fell to in-state rival BYU with an overall score of 192.875.
Utah State scored a 48.425 on vault, a season-best 48.725 on bars, 47.600 on beam and 48.125 on floor. BYU notched a 49.050 on bars, 48.850 on vault, 49.050 on floor and 48.075 on beam for their total of 195.025.
In all-around action, sophomore Sarah Landes finished with a total score of 39.175, just shy of her season-high, which was enough to give her the all-around title. Junior Paige Jones finished fourth with an overall score of 38.600.
Jones also finished tied for second on vault with her 9.850 as well as tying for first-place on floor with the same score. Landes and Jones were part of a four-way tie for third-place on bars, notching a 9.800. Landes also tied for second-place on beam with a 9.750.
Sophomore Susie Miller got things rolling with a 9.500 on vault. Freshman Michelle Yasukochi followed, matching her career-best with a 9.725. Sophomore Kaitlyn Betts notched a 9.575, while Jones registered a 9.825. Landes wrapped up the rotation with a 9.800.
After one rotation, BYU was in the lead, having totalled 49.050 on bars. Overall, the Aggies earned 48.425 on vault.
USU moved to bars for the second rotation of the night, led-off by Yasukochi who notched a 9.675. Senior Amelia Montoya tallied a season-high 9.750, followed by Jones who registered a 9.800. Landes also stuck a 9.800 while junior Christina Nye notched a season-high 9.725. After a fall, Betts finished off bars with an 8.925.
At the halfway point of the meet, the Cougars were hanging on to their lead, after notching 48.850 on vault for a total score of 97.900. The Aggies tallied a season-best 48.750 on bars for an overall score of 97.150
The Aggies moved to beam for the third portion of the evening with Miller again at the helm. It was a rough start on the apparatus as she notched a 9.100, followed by Jones who earned a 9.125. Yasukochi tallied a 9.450 while freshman Stefanie Daley received a 9.725. Landes landed a 9.750 followed by freshman Joanna Cuba who wrapped up the event with a 9.550.
The Aggies rallied 47.600 on beam, for an overall score of 144.750. The Cougars had a solid rotation on floor, increasing their lead to just over two points. They matched their bars score with a 49.050, contributing to their total of 146.950.
For the final event of the night, the Aggies moved to floor, with freshman Destiny Ezell up first who notched a 9.000. Montoya landed a season-best 9.700 followed by Miller who registered an 8.850. Landes notched a 9.825, matching her season-high, while Jones earned a 9.850, tying her career-high. Joanna Cuba was the last up, notching a career-best 9.750 and concluding the meet.
The Aggies have a weekend free to recover before continuing their homestand and concluding the regular season with a Western Athletic Conference meet against Boise State. Action will get underway at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 15. The Aggies are now 3-10 overall and 0-4 in league play.
