PROVO, Utah - Utah State’s gymnastics team notched its highest road score of the season, a 195.725 at a quad meet hosted by No. 21 BYU on Friday night at the Smith Fieldhouse.

The Aggies (7-9, 1-4 MRGC) placed third in the meet, but the 195.725 was the second-highest score ever recorded on the road against the Cougars, and highest since March 16, 2001 (195.750).

Penn State (10-5, 1-4 Big Ten) placed first with a 196.675, anchored by a perfect 10 on bars from Lauren Bridgens. Host BYU (10-5, 5-1 MRGC) took second with a 196.500, while Texas Woman’s (7-10, 5-0 MIC) placed fourth at 194.925.

“It was a season-high road score, which is awesome, and it was good to hear that because we didn’t do ourselves any favors starting this meet off on bars the way we did, but they dug in and did a great job turning it around,” said first-year USU head coach Amy Smith. “They put up three 49s on the other three events and fought through it, so I’m really proud of the scrappiness of this team. We needed that and they got it done, and that’s what’s important.”

Freshman Autumn DeHarde won her fourth beam title of the season with a career-high-tying 9.925. She now has seven titles overall, the other three coming on floor.

“We did really well,” said DeHarde, who also had a personal-best 9.775 on vault. “We had some mishaps on bars, but those are easy fixes, and we’ll be ready for next week. We have really been working on sticks, and that has been helping us a lot. It felt great to get up there and just be normal and do what I usually do.”

Utah State began the night with a 48.525 on bars. Junior Madison Ward led the way for the Aggies with a season-high 9.850, while sophomore Brittany Jeppesen had a 9.825.

The Aggies quickly turned things around in the second rotation on beam, notching a 49.050, aided by DeHarde’s 9.925. Fellow freshman Taylor Dittmar recorded a career-high 9.875 to tie for third.

“Taylor has been working that dismount, and tonight she hit it, so that was great to see her put up that 9.875,” Smith said.

In the third rotation, Ward and freshman Faith Leary both earned a 9.875 on floor to tie for third, helping Utah State record a 49.050 team score.

Closing the meet on vault, the Aggies finished with a 49.050 as sophomore Jazmyn Estrella tied for second with a personal-best 9.875. Leary, the reigning MRGC Vault Specialist of the Week, had a 9.825 to tie for fourth on the event.

“Floor and vault finished us out so strong in the second half of the meet,” Smith said. “They did a great job. A career high for Jazmyn is fantastic. Everybody is figuring it out that they just have to go for the vault, and we are getting bigger vaults out of them now instead of them playing tight. That has been fun to see.

“I’m just really proud of these guys not starting off strong, but finishing strong, and that’s what we’ve got to do this season. I am happy with the fact that we got our highest road score. That’s going to help our RQS.”

The Aggies return home to host Southern Utah for their annual Senior Night meet on Friday, March 16, at 7 p.m. at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.

“We’re just building from here,” Estrella said. “We knew we could pick it up after bars. Beam and floor are always our stronger events, so knowing we had those to pick us up after bars was really good.”
