LOGAN, Utah - Providing a sneak peek and a small taste of what is to come in the 2013 season, the Utah State gymnastics team held its annual Blue & White Meet Friday night at its practice gym in the USU HPER Building.
In past years, the Blue & White had been run in the style of a regular meet, but this season's event became more of a showcase for the team, with each gymnast getting a chance to show off some of the skills and routines she has been working on.
"We had a great showing, the girls really stepped up and did some great stuff," said head coach Jeff Richards. "We're really excited. We've got a lot of great things to happen this season."
Junior Paige Jones and sophomore Sarah Landes were two of the few to perform their entire routine with Jones on the uneven parallel bars and Landes on the floor. Other girls split their floor performances by sharing responsibilities of a floor routine.
Aside from injured athletes, each gymnast had an opportunity to perform, giving the audience a sneak peak of what is to come in January.
The team also encouraged a lot of audience interaction by holding contents between each event. Several other USU student-athletes participated in a push-up contest, a dance-off and a handstand contest.
With about 150 people in the audience in their practice gym, the Aggie gymnasts got a feel for the atmosphere of competition and are anxious for the season to begin.
"We had a great turnout of a crowd, so it kind of put the girls in the spotlight of how a meet will feel," Richards said. "The girls really felt that competition in this intimate setting."
The Aggies will open their regular season at in-state rival BYU on Saturday, Jan. 12. After another weekend on the road at Boise State, the team will return home to host WAC rival Southern Utah on Friday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m.
