LOGAN, Utah - Utah State Gymnastics Notes For Tri-Meet With Southern Utah and No. 13 Boise State Utah State Tri-Meet w/ #13 Boise State & Southern Utah Dee Glen Smith Spectrum (10,270) Logan, Utah Friday, Jan. 27, 2012 - 7 p.m. (MT) HOME OPENER ON TAP - Utah State gymnastics (1-3, 0-0 WAC) will make its 2012 home debut on Friday, Jan. 27, hosting former Western Athletic Conference foe and No. 13 Boise State (2-0) as well as current WAC opponent Southern Utah (0-2, 0-0 WAC) in a tri-meet... FIRST HOME MEET HISTORY - This is the second year in a row that Southern Utah has been the opponent for the Aggies' home opener... It is the second time in three years that Boise State has been the first meet opponent as the Broncos were in Logan for the Aggies' 2010 home-opener. CONFERENCE CONNECTIONS - Friday's meet will count toward the Western Athletic Conference standings for USU and SUU... The other two meetings between the Aggies and Thunderbirds will not count toward the WAC standings... Boise State is an independent in gymnastics this season but will be returning to the WAC in all sports except football next season. PUPIL VS. TEACHER - It's not quite as famous as noteworthy pupil vs. teacher match-ups like Luke Skywalker vs. Yoda, Henry David Thoreau vs. Ralph Waldo Emerson, Corey vs. Mr. Feeny, Neil Perry vs. John Keating, or even Bob Knight-Mike Krzyzewski, but Friday's meet features fourth-year USU head coach Jeff Richards facing his former boss, as he was an assistant under SUU head coach Scott Bauman from 1991-98. RIGHT OFF THE OL' CORN COB - Both head coaches began their coaching careers as student assistants for Utah State legendary head coach Ray Corn, with Richards coaching from 1988-90 while Bauman was with the Aggies through his 1990 graduation. ALMA MATER SWAP - Saturday's meet also features a match-up between two head coaches leading the opposite's alma mater, as USU's Richards is a 1995 Southern Utah graduate while SUU's Bauman is a 1990 graduate of Utah State. ABOUT UTAH STATE - The Aggies notched 13 career-bests on the way to posting a 197.450, finishing third at a quad meet at Texas Woman's by .1 of a point, as host TWU was second with a 197.550...No. 10 Oklahoma won the meet with what was at the time the highest score in the country with a 197.450 while Centenary finished in fourth-place with 191.400. Taking second in all-around competition, freshman Sarah Landes set a new career-high in all but one event, and bested her previous all-around score, for a total of 38.925. Junior Amelia Montoya beat her career-high on the uneven parallel bars, notching a score of 9.800, to finish tied for fifth as the highest scoring Aggie in the event. She also set a new high on the vault with a 9.750, to earn a final of 38.300 in the all-around competition. Sophomore Paige Jones set a new career-high in her all-around with 38.525, boosted by placed fifth on vault with a team-leading 9.825. Jones was fifth in the all-around while Montoya was sixth. Junior Amanda Watamaniuk also earned a personal best on the vault, landing a 9.675. Landes was the highest-placing USU gymnast on beam, tying for seventh with a 9.750 while Jones was the top Aggie on floor, tying for eighth with a 9.800. USU has a team-total average of 192.125, posting averages of 48.075 on vault, a WAC-best 48.663 on bars, 47.100 on beam and 48.288 on floor. Landes is fourth in the WAC, sixth in the North Central region and tied for 45th in the country in the all-around with a 38.875 average... She also is tied for fourth in the conference, tied for 11th in the region and tied for No. 90 in the nation on bars (9.763), as well as tied for sixth in the league, tied for No. 16 in the region and tied for 99th in the nation on beam (9.725)... Jones is second in the WAC, eighth in the region and tied for 57th in the country on vault (9.825), as well as tied for third in the conference, tied for 10th in the region and tied for 70th in the nation on floor (9.800). BAKER'S DOZEN - A total of 13 Aggie individual career-best marks were hit or tied Saturday night at Texas Woman's, including all five of USU's scoring vault scores... WAC-BEST BARS - Utah State leads the WAC with a 48.663 bars average... USU is fourth in the conference in both team total (192.125) and floor (48.288), while ranking fifth in the league stats in vault (48.075) and beam (47.100). SPARKS ALL-STARS - USU freshman Breyanna Aufiero, BSU junior Lacee Lang and freshman Amanda Otuafi are all from Sparks, Nev., but Aufiero went to Bishop Manogue Catholic HS and competed for Deltchev Club while Lang and Otuafi both went to Reed HS and competed for Flips USA Club. SUPER 16 - The 16 gymnasts on USU's 2012 roster is the most on an Aggie roster since 2006, after having 15 on the 2011 roster, 13 on the 2010 ledger, 12 on the 2009 roster... USU had 14 gymnasts on each of the 2008 and 2007 rosters, while having 16 on the 2006 roster. ABOUT SOUTHERN UTAH - The Thunderbirds are 0-2 on the year, but are averaging a 193.675 and are ranked No. 27 in the country... In its last outing, SUU suffered a narrow 194.800 - 194.050 loss to BYU... Despite the loss, junior Alyssa Click took home three individual titles, winning bars (9.875), floor (9.875) and the all-around with a career-best 39.400. Southern Utah is averaging 48.588 on vault, 48.188 on bars, 48.550 on beam and 48.350 on floor for its 193.675 total average... Click is averaging a 39.000 all-around score, including team-leading averages on floor (9.863) and beam (9.888), while also averaging 9.713 on vault and 9.538 on bars... Freshman Brittney Jensen leads SUU on vault with a 9.813 average while fellow freshman Jamie Armijo has a team-best 9.800 bars average. SUU head coach Scott Bauman is in his 21st season at the helm of the T-Birds, earning WAC Coach of the Year and North Central Region Coach of the Year honors in 2010... Bauman has led SUU to four consecutive NCAA Regional appearances and led the T-Birds to the 2010 WAC Championship trophy. ABOUT BOISE STATE - The Broncos are 2-0 after posting a season-high 196.175 on Friday in a dual with Sacramento State who notched a 191.875... Three BSU gymnasts won individual events and the all-around... Junior Brittany Potvin-Green won the all-around and vault (9.875) titles, while senior Lindsay Kazandjian and freshman Kelsey Morris shared the bars title with 9.850's and sophomore Amanda Otuafi won the floor with a 9.900. Boise State is averaging 49.038 on vault, 49.125 on bars, 48.450 on beam and 48.675 on floor for its team average of 195.288... Potvin-Green leads BSU on vault (9.850), beam (9.800) and the all-around (39.350)... Freshman Ciera Perkins has a team-leading 9.863 bars average while fellow freshman Caitlin Mann tops the team with a 9.763 average on floor. BSU co-head coaches Neil Resnick and Tina Bird are in their fifth season at the reins of the Broncos, posting an 84-24 record... Last season, Resnick and Bird guided BSU to the 2011 WAC Championship and a third-place finish at the 2011 NCAA North Central Regional... Under Resnick and Bird, the Broncos have won three of the last four WAC titles (2008, 2009, 2011). SERIES HISTORY VS. SOUTHERN UTAH - Utah State has a combined 36-34 record all-time vs. Southern Utah, including 21-8 at home... Friday is the first of three regular-season meetings between USU and SUU, as the Aggies will also meet the T-Birds in a tri-meet at BYU on Feb. 25, and Utah State will head to Cedar City for a dual at SUU on March 9... SUU will also return to Logan on March 24 for the WAC Championships... The T-Birds have topped the Aggies in the last 15 meetings, taking all four regular-season meetings plus finishing higher at the WAC Championships... USU's last win over SUU was on a certain USU gymnastics' media relations contact birthday on Feb. 23, 2007 when USU scored a season-high 195.675 while SUU notched a 194.700. SERIES HISTORY VS. BOISE STATE - Utah State is 53-27 all-time vs. Boise State, including 25-7 at Logan... BSU won all three meetings last year, as the Aggies faced the Broncos in home-and-home duals, and in the WAC Championships... USU is currently on a 13-meet losing skid in match-ups with BSU, last winning on March 31, 2007 at the WAC Championships, when Utah State was third while Boise State was sixth. TOUGH TRODDING FOR WAC TEAMS - The top two scores in the NCAA have been in meets vs. WAC teams as Oklahoma's winning score of 197.450 on Saturday in the quad meet with Utah State is the second-highest score this season in the country, only topped by a 197.575 by UCLA on Sunday in a win over San Jose State. LAST TIME OUT - A night of career-highs helped the Utah State gymnastics team come away from a quad-meet hosted by Texas Woman's University in a close-call third place finish Saturday night. No. 10 University of Oklahoma came away as the winners of the meet with a final score of 197.450. Host TWU finished in second place with 192.425, just a tenth of a point ahead of the Aggies' 192.325. Centenary College finished in fourth-place with 191.400. Taking second in all-around competition, freshman Sarah Landes set a new career-high in all but one event, and bested her previous all-around score, for a total of 38.925. She was followed by Jones who notched a 9.200 in her first meet of the season. Freshman Susie Miller was next, who with a fall, earned a 8.825. Montoya was next with a 9.025 while senior Haley Hogan followed with an 8.900. Landes wrapped up the event with a 9.750, just beating her score from last week's meet at Utah. After the first rotation, the Aggies were in fourth with a total of 46.475. OU led with 49.375 on bars, followed by Centenary at 48.525 on floor and TWU with 48.350 on vault. Moving to floor for the second rotation, Miller landed a 9.75 and Watamaniuk finished with a score of 9.600. Landes was next, landing a 9.750, again beating her score from last week for a new career-high. Montoya followed with a 9.725. Jones was next with a 9.800 while Follett concluded the event with an 8.450. The Aggies finished floor exercises with a total of 48.625, for a running score of 95.100. After the second rotation, Oklahoma maintained their lead with 98.625. Texas Woman's was at 96.900 while Centenary was at 96.575. On vault for the third rotation, freshman Breyanna Aufiero kicked it off with an 8.625. She was followed by Watamaniuk and her career-high score of 9.675. Miller went next, stopping herself from falling and notching a 9.575. Montoya nailed her landing, earning a 9.750, also breaking her personal record. On a roll, Landes was next, again beating her career-high with a 9.725. Jones rounded out the event with a 9.825, tying her career-high. Every score counted in the USU vault total was either a new or tied career-high. The Aggies ended the third rotation with a total of 48.550, with an overall score of 143.650. With one event remaining, OU was at 148.075, Texas Woman's at 144.350 and Centenary at 143.800. To conclude the quad meet, the Aggies moved to the uneven bars, with senior Rebecca Holliday up first. She earned a 9.750, followed by a new career-high of 9.800 from Montoya. Watamaniuk was up next with a 9.150, preceding scores of 9.700 from both Landes and Jones. Freshman Kaitlyn Betts wrapped up the rotation as well as the meet with a score of 9.725, a new high score for her after competing at Utah last week. BEEHIVE STATERS - Utah State has three gymnasts from the state of Utah in senior Haley Hogan (Centerville/Viewmont HS/North Davis Gymnastics), sophomore Christina Nye (North Logan/Logan HS/Tytans Gymnastics) and freshman Ashley Follett (American Fork, Utah/American Fork HS/All American Gymnastics). FLIPPING THE BOOKS TOO - Utah State had four gymnasts earn academic all-WAC honors last season, and three return, in seniors Haley Hogan and Rebecca Holliday, along with junior Amanda Watamaniuk. 2011 REVIEW - Utah State finished with a No. 47 ranking in the Troester/GymInfo Women's Gymnastics Coaches Poll... USU had a final Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) of 192.935, a season-average of 192.483 and a season-high of 194.550... The Aggies were fourth in the WAC and eighth in the North Central final rankings... USU was also fourth in the WAC on two of the four apparatus: vault (48.400 RQS/48.173 avg./48.600 high), bars (48.555 RQS/48.308 avg./49.000 high), while ranking fifth on the other two events: beam (47.820 RQS/47.575 avg./48.625 high) and floor (48.625 RQS/48.427 avg./48.975 high). Individually, Nicole Simoneau was fourth in the WAC, tied for 11th in the North Central region and tied for No. 55 in the country with a 9.835 RQS and a 9.765 average with a season-high of 9.875... Simoneau is also tied for 14th in the conference and 38th in the region on beam with a 9.710 RQS and a 9.584 average with a season-best of 9.750... Lyndsie Boone was tied for eighth in the WAC and tied for 24th in the region on vault with a 9.775 RQS and a 9.738 average with a high score on the season of 9.825... Jackie Dillon was tied for ninth in the WAC and tied for 21st in the region on floor with a 9.800 RQS and a 9.771 average, with a top season score of 9.850... Dillon was also sixth in the conference and 12th in the region as well as 76th in the nation in the all-around with a 38.720 RQS and 38.423 average with a season-high score of 38.150. UTAH STATE'S RICHARDS NAMED NACGC CO-REGIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR - Utah State gymnastics head coach Jeff Richards was named the NCAA Division I National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches (NACGC) North Central Region Co-Coach of the Year, in a vote by the region's head coaches at the NCAA Division I Gymnastics North Central Regional. Richards shares the award with Utah co-head coach Megan Marsden. Richards led five Aggie individuals to the NCAA North Central Regional Championships last Saturday in Denver, Colo. Senior Jackie Dillon was eighth in the all-around with a score of 38.450 to lead the Aggies on the night. The eighth-place finish was the highest of the night for Utah State. Freshman Rachel Vaske was 12th in the all-around with a score of 38.025. Senior Lyndsie Boone capped off an amazing Utah State career, finishing 14th in the all-around with a score of 37.950. A GLANCE AT THE AGGIES - Breyanna Aufiero - Notched a 9.500 on vault (8th) in collegiate debut at the Utah dual... Scored an 8.625 on vault (24th) at the Texas Woman's quad meet.
