LOGAN, Utah - Sophomore gymnast Sarah Landes was named the America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Jan. 21-27.
This is Landes' fourth USU Student-Athlete of the Week award, having earned the honor three times as a freshman.
Landes (Edmond, Okla.) won the all-around competition with a season-high score of 39.125 in Friday's tri-meet with Southern Utah and Hamline University. USU posted a 1-1 record in the tri-meet with a season-high score of 192.875 as it defeated Hamline (181.975) and lost to SUU (194.025). Landes also won the beam title with a season-best score of 9.825, while placing fifth on vault with a career-high 9.800. She also finished third on bars with a 9.775, and tied for third on floor with a season-high 9.725.
Utah State and Southern Utah will meet again this weekend, this time in a Western Athletic Conference meet at SUU on Friday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m.
Nominees from other sports for USU Student-Athlete of the Week included: MEN'S BASKETBALL - Junior guard/forward Spencer Butterfield (Loomis, Calif.) averaged a double-double with 19.5 points and 13.0 rebounds in Utah State's two home losses to UT Arlington (74-68) and Louisiana Tech (51-48) last weekend. Against UTA, Butterfield scored a career-high 23 points and added a then career-best 11 rebounds for his first-ever double-double as he was 7-of-14 (.500) from the field, 4-of-9 (.444) from three-point range and 5-for-6 (.833) at the free throw line. Butterfield then logged his second-straight double-double with 16 points and a career-high 15 rebounds against LTU. For the week, Butterfield shot 40.7 percent from the field (11-27), 40.0 percent from three-point range (6-15) and 84.6 percent (11-13) at the free throw line. He also averaged 1.5 assists and 1.0 steals during the two games in 34.0 minutes per outing.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL - Senior guard Jenna Johnson (Wasilla, Alaska) helped Utah State to a 2-0 record last weekend with a pair of road wins at UT Arlington (93-83) and at Louisiana Tech (76-75 OT). Against UTA, Johnson scored 16 points and had a team-leading nine rebounds, to go along with five steals and four assists, as she was 4-of-10 (.400) from the field and a perfect 8-for-8 at the free throw line. Against LTU, Johnson scored 15 points including the game-winning basket with five seconds left in overtime. She also had seven rebounds, four steals and three assists in the game. For the week, Johnson averaged 15.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 4.5 steals and 3.5 assists per game, while shooting 25.0 percent from the field (7-28) and 85.0 percent at the free throw line (17-20).
MEN'S TENNIS - Senior Sven Poslusny (Lorrach, Germany) went 1-0 in singles play this past weekend as Utah State lost at UNLV, 5-2, and against Northern Arizona, 4-0. Against the Rebels, Poslusny posted a three-sets win at No. 1 singles (3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8) and teamed with sophomore Marcus Fritz in doubles play as the duo dropped an 8-6 decision at the first position. Against the Lumberjacks, Poslusny and Fritz lost in doubles play at the first position, 8-6, while his match at No. 1 singles was left unfinished.
WOMEN'S TENNIS - Sophomore McKenzie Davis (Salt Lake City, Utah) posted a three-sets win at No. 1 singles (7-5, 3-6, 6-1) in Utah State's 6-1 loss at BYU last weekend. Davis also teamed with senior Jaci West at the first doubles position and the duo lost, 8-7 (4).
MEN'S TRACK & FIELD - Sophomore Nic Bowens (Meridian, Idaho) won the 60m dash with a time of 6.86 at the Boise State hosted Jacksons/New Balance Invitational this past weekend.
WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD - Sophomore Jodi Williams (Enterprise, Utah) won the women's high jump with a mark of 1.65m (5-05.00) at the Boise State hosted Jacksons/New Balance Invitational this past weekend.
