Utah State vs. Southern Utah

THIS WEEK -- Utah State closes out its two meet home stand Fri., Feb. 2 when it takes on Southern Utah at 7 p.m. in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.

SCOUTING SOUTHERN UTAH -- Southern Utah is currently 3-4 on the season after finishing fourth in a quad meet at UCLA over the weekend. The Thunderbirds tied their season-high score of 191.525 and were led by all-arounder Suzi Clark who posted a 38.450. All-time USU holds a 29-4 advantage over SUU including a 15-1 record at home. The last time these two teams met was at the 2000 NCAA Regionals where Utah State outscored Southern Utah 192.950-191.800.

NEXT WEEK -- USU hits the road for two meets next week as it travels to Salt Lake City, Utah to face fourth-ranked Utah Tues., Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. in the Huntsman Center. The Aggies then meet up with 24th-ranked Denver Sat., Feb. 10. The meet is set to begin at 7 p.m. in Hamilton Gymnasium.

UTAH STATE'S RAY CORN -- Utah State's Ray Corn (Northern Colorado '71) is in his 24th year as head coach of the Aggies. He is the only gymnastics coach in USU history. Corn has led his teams to a 329-190-2 regular-season meet record and has now led them to post-season competition in 22 of his 23 seasons, including 15 straight trips to the NCAA Midwest Regionals. Five times Aggie squads have competed at the national championships. Corn was named NCAA Midwest Region Coach of the Year in 1991 and has been honored as High Country Athletic Conference Coach of the Year three times and Big West Conference Coach of the Year in 1994, 1996 and 1998. Corn's overall record, including post-season play, currently stands at 382-328-2.

INJURY REPORT -- Junior Kirra Seeley (Degener) (Kaysville, Utah) will likely sit out the 2001 season recovering from surgery on her right thumb to repair a torn ligament suffered during fall training. Competition in the late season will depend upon rehabilitation.

A LOOK BACK AT THE BOISE STATE MEET -- Sophomore Tina Ellis won two events en route to claiming the all-around title and leading Utah State to a 194.075-193.600 win over Boise State in its home opener, Jan. 26. The win avenged a season-opening loss by Utah State at Boise State. In Boise, the Aggies scored just a 188.800, while the Broncos won that Jan. 15 meet with a 192.225 score. Utah State opened the meet with a 48.325 on the vault. Junior Jessenia Abrego led the team scoring a 9.750 and freshman Mika Houston turned in a 9.700. USU couldn't be stopped in the second rotation as it tied the fourth best bar score in school history posting a 49.225. Five athletes either tied or set new career highs on the event. Sophomore Tina Ellis won the event with her 9.925 and Houston followed close behind with a 9.875. The Aggies were forced to count two falls in the third rotation posting just a 47.900 on the beam. Ellis again led the team with her 9.850 performance. Utah State clinched the victory in the final rotation notching a 48.625 on the floor exercise. Senior Kristin O'Dell recorded a season-high 9.800, while Ellis continued to dominate scoring a team-high 9.850.

A LOOK AT THE AGGIES-

Jessenia Abrego - Junior from Las Vegas, Nev. ... turned in a season-high 9.600 on the floor against Boise State (1/26)... recorded a season-high 9.775 on vault at Cal-Berkeley (1/21)... has career-highs of 9.825 on the vault, 9.900 on the bars, and 9.900 on the floor.

Kristen Bloom -- Sophomore from Ossining, N.Y. ... has competed on just the beam and floor this season posting high scores of 9.875 on beam and 9.725 on floor at Cal-Berkeley (1/21)... her 9.875 on beam at Cal-Berkeley was a new career-high... owns other career-highs of 9.700 on vault, 9.875 on bars, 9.925 on floor, and 39.175 in the all-around.

Chere DuPaix - Freshman from Salt Lake City, Utah... has not done gymnastics for over two years but is slowly improving and should be a factor in the bar lineup by the end of the season.

Tina Ellis -- Sophomore from Kearns, Utah... won the first all-around title of her career notching a career-high 39.225 against Boise State (1/26)... also won the beam (9.850) and bar (9.925) competitions against Boise State... her 9.925 on the bars was a new career-high and ties the fourth best bar score in school history... set a new career-high on the beam (9.925) at Cal-Berkeley (1/21)... her 9.925 on beam at Cal-Berkeley won the event in the quad-meet... finished third on beam (9.750) and vault (9.700) at BSU.

Kristen Fargo -- Sophomore from Manassas, Va. ... competed on vault (9.600) for the first time this season against Boise State(1/26)... posted a season-high 9.525 on the beam at Boise State (1/15) ... has career-bests of 9.800 on vault, and 9.675 on beam.

Stephanie Gordon (Huff) -- Junior from Spanish Fork, Utah... has yet to compete during the 2001 season because of an ankle injury but is once again expected to be one of USU's most reliable competitors on the vault and floor exercise... will likely see action against Southern Utah... recorded career-highs of 9.800 on vault, 9.425 on beam, and 9.850 on floor in 2000.

Mika Houston - Freshman from Las Vegas, Nev. ... finished tied for third on the bars with a career-high 9.875 on bars against BSU (1/26)... has recorded a 9.700 twice on the vault this year... saw all-around action in her collegiate debut at Boise State (1/15)... finished tied for third on the vault (9.700) with teammate Tina Ellis at BSU.

Amanda Jenkins -- Senior from Plain City, Utah... competed for the first time in her career at Boise State (1/15) finishing third on the bars with a 9.850 performance... tied her career-high on bars turning in a mark of 9.850 against Boise State (1/26).

Nicole Kilpatrick -- Sophomore from Ringwood, N.J. ... had a breakout performance at Cal-Berkeley (1/21) recording new career-highs on each of the three events she competed... she notched a 9.700 on vault, a 9.675 on bars, and a 9.875 on beam.

Kyla Mattioli - Freshman from Hampton, N.J. ... scored a season-high 9.625 on the floor against BSU (1/26)... scored a season-high 9.775 on the vault at Cal-Berkeley (1/21)... competed on the vault and floor in her first collegiate meet at BSU (1/15).

Kira Nulph - Freshman from American Falls, Idaho... has competed on the beam in two meets for USU this season.

Kristin O'Dell -- Senior co-captain from Middleton, Wis. ... currently leads the team in season average on the floor exercise (9.700)... notched a season-high 9.800 on the floor against Boise State (1/26)... led the floor team at BSU (1/15) posting a score of 9.725... has career-highs of 9.825 on the floor and 9.825 on the vault.

Brittnee Penman - Freshman from Murray, Utah... recorded a career-best 9.900 on the bars to earn a second-place finish against BSU (1/26)... averaging a 9.617 on the bars for the season.

Allison Rosenthal -- Sophomore from Scottsdale, Ariz. ... has competed on the floor twice this season for the Aggies turning in a season-best 9.750 against BSU (1/26).

Kimberly Scharman -- Junior from Salt Lake City, Utah... has see action on the beam for Utah State recording a career-high 9.700 twice this year.

Megan Woolstenhulme -- Senior co-captain from Pleasant View, Utah... tied for first on the vault at Cal-Berkeley scoring a team and season-high 9.825 (1/21)... started the year scoring a 9.575 on vault and a 9.200 on beam against Boise State (1/15).
